Cave Spring's Amy Causey found redemption at the free-throw line Monday.
The Cave Spring sophomore came off the bench for a career-high 16 points. She hit four free throws and had a key blocked shot in the final 1:43 as the Knights beat Pulaski County 70-64 to throw the Roanoke Valley District girls' basketball race into a three-way tie.
The Knights (10-6 overall, 7-2 district) had lost twice to Pulaski County (11-6, 7-2) before downing the Cougars. William Fleming (12-4, 7-2) is the third team in the logjam and has two games against Pulaski County and one against the Knights.
Causey missed a 3-point shot that would have enabled the Knights to tie the Cougars in their last meeting. ``I was open with three seconds left. So I wanted to get it back, make up for the 3-point shot I missed,'' said Causey.
Causey's blocked shot came against Pulaski County's Sarah Donald in the final minute when the Cougars had a chance to cut the Knights' lead to two. Causey was fouled immediately and hit both free throws that made it 68-62 to put the game in the Knights' win column.
``Amy's potential has always been there,'' said Cave Spring coach Linda Long. ``She's started and come off the bench. She does well coming off the bench. I don't know if it's sophomore nerves that she doesn't do as well when she starts.''
Pulaski County freshman Katrina Williams kept the Cougars close in the first half, missing only one shot and scoring 15 of her game-high 27 points. She missed eight shots in a row in the second half before hitting a 3-point shot, two free throws and another field goal before fouling out.
``We had to play her more than usual because her sub [Missy Shirah] had a sprained ankle,'' said Pulaski County coach Buddy Farris.
Causey got a lot of help. Junior Lisa Brian had 10 points early in one of her best starts, and Stacie Morioka had 13 points including five of eight free throws in the final period.
Senior Jaclyn Banks pulled in 14 rebounds and had 11 points after a slow start. Banks scored a field goal in the second quarter to go over 1,000 points for a career that started four years ago at William Byrd.
``She was thinking about that one point and she was a little nervous,'' said Long.
