NORTHSIDE STAYS TIED ATOP DISTRICT

Northside defeated William Byrd 59-45 in a boys' basketball game on Monday to remain in a first-place tie in the Blue Ridge District.

The Vikings (11-6 overall, 7-1 district) built a 15-point lead midway through the second quarter and led by 13 at the half.

The Terriers (12-5, 3-4 ) went on a 23-10 run to tie the score at 37-37 during the third quarter. Northside responded with a 22-8 spurt to regain control. The Terriers never led in the game.

Northside was without starters Adam Gray and Spence Peters. Gray had a broken ankle and Peters developed strep throat over the weekend.

William Byrd played without starter Chris Childress and head coach Paul Barnard, who was ejected during the Salem game over the weekend and served a one-game suspension. Assistant David Culicerto was the interim coach.

Mayo Wilson led the Terriers with 13 points. Ben Peete had 19 points for Northside.

Alleghany 59, Lord Botetourt 49: In Low Moor, the Mountaineers built a seven-point lead and cruised in the second half as they downed the Cavaliers in a Blue Ridge District game.

Casey Burks led Alleghany (3-14, 3-5) early, scoring nine points in the opening quarter, all on 3-pointers. He also had a big third quarter, scoring 10 points, including two 3-pointers. Jarred Haslett added 12 points in the win.

Sean Osbourne was the lone double-digit scorer for Lord Botetourt (4-11, 4-6) with 14, including a trio of 3-pointers.

Holy Cross 58, Roanoke Catholic 55: For the second time in three days the Celtics tried to come back in the fourth quarter against the Gaels, but unlike Saturday night's Virginia Independent Conference contest, Roanoke Catholic fell short Monday night.

The Celtics (4-12, 3-7), who came back to win a 62-60 decision over the weekend, faced a six-point deficit with 10 seconds on the clock. Terron Reed hit a 3-pointer, and Holy Cross had a turnover on the inbounds pass. Brendan McCarthy had a chance to tie it in the final seconds with another 3-pointer, but his shot missed.

Garth Calhoun and Sherman Hughes each had 13 points to pace the Gaels (7-15, 6-7).

McCarthy finished with 12 points and Reed had 10. Chris Lothes led the Celtics with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Chad Wall scored 11.

Patrick Henry 68, Pulaski Co. 52: The Patriots took control of the Roanoke Valley District contest in the second quarter by outscoring the Cougars 24-12.

Patrick Henry used its height advantage to outrebound Pulaski 25-15. Patrick Henry shot 62 percent from the field.

Brooks Berry led the Patriots with 18 points. Jamar McNair led Pulaski (5-9, 0-5) with 15, points and freshman Dorian Hendricks added 14.

Roanoke Valley Christian 81, Hargrave Military 60: The Eagles led by 24 points in the third quarter and coasted to a 21-point victory over the Tigers in the Virginia Independent Conference game.

Joel Nester led Roanoke Valley Christian (15-4, 9-2) with 25 points. James Searcy scored 23 for Hargrave Military Academy (5-12, 4-8).

Girls

William Fleming 58, Patrick Henry 33: Shaunarey Walker scored 14 of her game-high 20 points in first half as the Colonels cruised to a Roanoke Valley District victory.

William Fleming (11-4, 6-2) led 38-12 at halftime. Renita Walker scored 12 for the Colonels.

Renae Hill led Patrick Henry (1-14, 1-8) with 13 points.

Timberlake Christian 38, North Cross 30: In Lynchburg, Timberlake pulled away in the second half to defeat the Raiders in a Blue Ridge Conference game.

Julie Sarris led Timberlake (5-9 overall, 5-5 conference) with a dozen points, six in the second quarter. Debbie Phillips had 10 points.

Freshman Mary Angela Mull was the leading scorer for North Cross (4-9, 4-5) with 10 points.

Roanoke Valley 65, Hargrave Military 10: The Eagles held Hargrave scoreless in two quarters to win a Blue Ridge Conference game.

Gina Guthrie had 17 points and seven steals, and Rebecca Bryant had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead Roanoke Valley Christian (13-2, 8-1).

Hargrave (0-14) got all but one point on 3-point goals.
