Local-music database developed

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Office of Program Advising and Student Entertainment has developed a database of local music.

One of the purposes of this database is to provide entertainment for the annual Brush Mountain Arts and Crafts Fair, sponsored by the Voluntary Action Center of Montgomery County and scheduled March 29 through March 31 at the Rector Field House on the Virginia Tech campus.

If you are part of or know a local musical group of children's act (puppets, clowns, etc.), and you are interested in performing at the fair on a volunteer basis, call the Virginia Tech PASE office at 231-5661.

Hollins College poetry reading

Poet Shelly Wagner will read from her book, ``The Andrew Poems,'' on March 7 at 7 p.m. in Hollins College's Talmadge Hall.

Wagner was drawn to writing poetry by her grief at the death of her 5-year-old son. Wagner hopes to show the writing of poetry as one way to work through grief.

There is no admission charge.

'Mardi Gras 1996' at Hotel Roanoke

Roanoke's ``Mardi Gras 1996'' will feature an evening of jazz at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center on Feb. 24 from 6:30 to 11 p.m.

Headliner for the evening is the Lenny Marcus Trio, with saxophonist Chip McNeill. McNeill will also direct the Virginia Tech Jazz Ensemble, with the New Virginians adding voices to the music.

Tickets for the buffet and music are $40. After 8:30 p.m., music and light hors d'oeuvres will be available for $20.

The hotel will offer a special room package that includes overnight accommodations and a ticket to ``Mardi Gras 1996.''

The evening is presented by the Young Art Patrons of the Art Museum of Western Virginia. All proceeds benefit the museum's general operating fund.

Museum announces restoration program

The Virginia Museum of Transportation has announced an extensive restoration program for 1996.

The museum is seeking volunteers to join in the renovation, restoration and beautification of some of the museum's most significant artifacts.

The next ``Restoration Kick '96'' will be held Feb. 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the project will be completion of a Cadillac fire truck and initial work on an Oren fire engine.

Other projects will include locomotives and rail equipment, automobiles, trucks and other small transportation items.

No experience is necessary.

Fiction reading at Roanoke College

Michael Parker, author of ``Hello, Down There'' will present a fiction reading Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Roanoke College's Sutton Student Center Glass Lounge.

``Hello, Down There'' was named the 1993 Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times. Parker is an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He was recently included in Granta magazines's Most Promising Young Novelists in America list.

The event is free and open to the public.

Genealogists meet Saturday at library

The Southwestern Virginia Genealogical Society will meet Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Brody Room of the Roanoke City Main Library downtown in Elmwood Park.

Carol Tuckwiller, Virginia Room librarian, will moderate a discussion on ``Bring Your Research Problems for Help.''
