DEFENDANT IN `PHOTOTRON' POT CASE DIES

A Rocky Mount electrician accused of helping put together an indoor marijuana-growing operation in the Roanoke area died of brain cancer last week.

Darrell D. Gordon, 30, was the only one of 10 defendants in what is known as the "Phototron" marijuana operation who did not plead guilty last year.

Gordon pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and growing and distributing marijuana. His attorney said at the time that Gordon wanted to go to trial and fight the charges.

After his arraignment, his condition deteriorated to the point that he could not aid in his defense. A federal judge last fall continued the case against him indefinitely.

Gordon underwent surgery last spring, but his illness recurred and had debilitated him by last fall.
