Navy hospitalman Melissa Atkins has departed for a six-month overseas deployment to the Persian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. She is one of more than 5,600 sailors and Marines aboard the carrier, which departed from Bremerton, Wash.

Atkins is a 1992 graduate of Shawsville High School who joined the Navy November 1992. She is the daughter of Maria and Richard Atkins of Elliston.

Army Pfc. Jared Cox recently arrived for duty at Fort Stewart, Ga. Cox, a tanker, is the son of Jerry and Charlotte Cox of Dublin.

Marine Pvt. Roy Calloway of Radford recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C. A 1993 graduate of Radford High School, he is the son of Roy Calloway and Deborah Calloway, both of Radford.

Bronwyn Robinson has been commissioned a second lieutenant through the Air Force Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) program after earning a bachelor's degree at Pennsylvania State University.

A 1991 graduate of Blacksburg High School, Robinson received a degree in civil engineering. She is the daughter of Lucian and Susan Robinson of Blacksburg.

Marine Cpl. Michael Daley has been promoted to his present rank while serving with 2nd Assault Amphibious Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Daley joined the Marine Corps in 1988. He is the son of David Daley of Pilot.

Navy Seaman Douglas Tucker of Pulaski recently returned to Yokosuka, Japan, after a two-month overseas deployment to the Persian Gulf. Tucker is a 1994 graduate of Pulaski County High School and joined the Navy June 1994. He is the son of Warren and Edith Tucker of Pulaski.
