BROWN, Raymond Wayne Sr., 64, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 1996 at the Veterans Hospital in Salem. He was retired from Kroger Warehouse and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Payne Brown; one son, Raymond Wayne Brown Jr., Penhook; special friend, Ellen Fitzgerald; grandson, David P. Brown; two stepgrandchildren, Amanda and Gary Fitzgerald; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Cecil and Lena Brown, Wirtz, Jadie and Jane Brown, Chester, Winfred and Helen Brown, Chesapeake; two sisters, Erma Anderson, Roanoke, Jean and husband, Stelford Divers, Wirtz; two sisters-in-law, Venie Brown, Suffolk, and Frances Brown, Roanoke; brother-in-law, Eddie Payne, Roanoke; also several nieces and nephews; special cousin, Marvin Perdue. COCHRAN, Robert W., (``Bob''), 92, of Hillsville, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 1996, in Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. He was born July 8, 1903 in Carroll County, son of the late Fulton and Beatrice Staples Cochran. Mr. Cochran was preceded in death by his wife, Nina W. Cochran. He i s survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Benton and Elsie Cochran, Hillsville; daughter and son-in-law, Estelle and James Burnette, Richmond; brother, Curtis Cochran, Hillsville; four grandchildren, Bobby Burnette, Cindy Combs, Kim Bunn, and Mike Cochran; one great-grandson, Robert Brady (Bo) Bunn. DOWDY, Howard Lindberg, Sr., 63, of Pearisburg, died Tuesday, February 13, 1996. Mr. Dowdy was born on November 29, 1932, in Giles County, and was a son of the late Albert Franklin and Annie Elmore Dowdy. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Bill Dowdy, Gilbert Dowdy, Frank Dowdy Jr., Walter Dowdy and Claude Dowdy. Mr. Dowdy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, New River Ward, in Pembroke. He was an employee of Federal Mogul in Blacksburg. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Ann Dowdy of Pearisburg; three sons, Howard Lindberg Dowdy Jr. of Pearisburg, Timothy Dowdy of Narrows and Danny Dowdy of Howell, Mich.; four daughters, Mary Ann Dowdy of Pearisburg, Melissa Dawn Langley of Washington, N.C., Debra Jo Lynch of Mason, Mich., and Linda Darlene Jarae of Ovid, Mich.; three brothers, Randolph Dowdy of Leesburg, Rudolph Dowdy of Luray and Arthur Dowdy of Ogden, Utah; a sister, Mary White of Gold Bond; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Collins of Pembroke, and seven grandchildren. GILLESPIE, Theresa Courtney, 26, of Blacksburg, died Monday, February 12, 1996. Theresa was a native of Richmond. She graduated from Virginia Tech in 1993, and began graduate school in the spring semester of 1996. She was an associate editor and contributor to ""Dead Snakes, Cats, and the IRS: Poetry of Rock and Rebellion"". She was a talented and sensitive writer and her work reflected the deep feelings within her. Surviving are her husband, Clyde G. Gillespie Jr.; her parents, John K. and Marjorie Frederick Johnson; a sister, Chandra Johnson; and a brother, Caleb Etz, all of Richmond; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Franklin H. and Elizabeth Titlow, Blacksburg; grandparents, Dick and Courtney Allen Frederick, Richmond, John P. and Pat Johnson, Zolfo Springs, Fla; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 16, 1996, at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. D. Cameron Murchison Jr. officiating. GWINN, Katherine Middleton, 104, died Tuesday, February 13, 1996 in the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blacksburg. She was born in Lexington on May 17, 1891, and was the daughter of the late John William and Sarah Virginia Figgatt Middleton. Mrs. Gwinn was a ""real daughter"" in the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Her father was a member of the Rockbridge Rifles Company ""H"", 27th Virginia Infantry, Stonewall Brigade. Her father fought with General Stonewall Jackson and was wounded and captured at the Battle of Gettysburg, and spent the rest of the Civil War as a prisoner of war. Mr. Middleton's sword, bayonet, leather scabbard, and canteen are on display at the Virginia Military Institute Museum in Lexington. Mrs. Gwinn was a member of Lakeland Chapter #74, O.E.S. of Narrows, and has the honor of being the Second Worthy Matron following the organization of the Eastern Star. She attended Sullins College and graduated from Longwood College. She moved to Rich Creek in 1911 to teach school, and married William Gray Gwinn in 1920, and lived there the rest of her life. Mrs. Gwinn was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Giles County Historical Society. She was a faithful member of the Rich Creek United Methodist Church in Rich Creek, and the McComas Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was preceded in death by two brothers; eight sisters; and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by a niece, Katherine Hall Arnold of Griffin, Ga.; a close frien d, Joan Browning, Ronceverte, W.Va.; longtime caregivers, Rose Marie Howard, Ballard, W.Va., Louise Williams, Peterstown, W.Va., and Sylvia Poff, Greenville, W.Va. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Rich Creek United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tim Graham officiating. Burial will follow in Sunrise Memorial Gardens, Rich Creek. The family will gather with their friends at Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., where a memorial service will be conducted by the Lakeland Chapter #74, O.E.S. at 7:30 p.m.

HANCOCK, Maude Privette, 93, of Sun City West, Arizona, formerly of Roanoke, died Friday, February 9, 1996. She was born in Crumpler, W. Va. on September 7, 1902. Mrs. Hancock worked at the former Cavalier Restaurant for about 20 years during the 1940's and 1950's and from 1963 to 1969 she was house mother at the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity House at Roanoke College and she was former member of the Windsor Hills Baptist Church. She moved to Arizona in 1991. The deceased is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Jim Fleshman, Sun City West, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Clara M. Hancock, Roanoke; five grandsons, James W. Fleshman Jr., Bethesda, Md., Michael Fleshman, New York City, N.Y., Franklin P. Hancock III, Gregory M. Hancock, both of Roanoke, Charles M. Hancock, New Market, Md.; three great-grandchildren, Johanna, Patrick and Corey Hancock. Mrs. Hancock was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin P. Hancock and a son, Franklin P. Hancock Jr. Funeral services will be Oakey's Roanoke Chapel 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 16, 1996 with the Rev. Lawrence C. Dodson officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. HARRIS, Ruby Ethel Lest er Cox, 82, of Route 2, Willis, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 1996, at the home of her son. She was born March 28, 1913, a daughter of the late John F. and Ella May Lester, and was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Jep Cox, Cliff Harris, and Early Harris; one son, Arnie Harris; one sister, Lucille Lester; three brothers, Davis Lester, Elvin Lester and Dempsey Lester. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Jane Cox, Willis; several stepsons and stepdaughters; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lela Marshall, Radford, Ada and Aaron Altizer, Floyd, Annie and George Bower, Gay Royal, Christiansburg; one brother, Ray Lester, Christiansburg; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. JEWELL, Ella Mae Tucker, 93, of Ashland, died Wednesday, February 14, 1996. She was the daughter of Isaac L. and Martha Anne Abbott Tucker of Botetourt County, Va., and was the wife of t he late Hubert H. Jewell Sr. She is survived be five sons, Ballard L. of Gordonsville, Hubert H. Jr. of Alexandria, Robert L. of Doswell, Wayne T. and L. Ritchie Jewell both of Ashland; one daughter, Anne J. Bales of Ashland; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Mrs. Ruth Hartman of Burlington, N.C.; her brother, Elmer Tucker of Fincastle. LARCH, Paul W., 77, of Natural Bridge, died Wednesday, February 14, 1996, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was a veteran of World War II and retired from Cleaves Food Service at VMI in Lexington. He is survived by one sister, Adlee Larch Sisson, Roanoke; and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be held Friday, February 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Mill Creek Cemetery. LITTLE, Sterling, 75, of 320 Hershberger Rd., Roanoke passed away Wednesday, February 14, 1996, after a lengthy illness. Formerly of Louisville, Ky., he was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy (Florist Rd.) and a retired painter. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy M. Born in Longshop, Va. on August 18, 1908, she was the daughter of the late John Gordon Albert and Addie Long Albert. She was also preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years, Vernon Lee McCoy. SHAV ER, James Raymond, 77, of the Gold Bond community in Giles County, died Wednesday morning, February 14, 1996, in Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, W.Va. Born in Giles County on October 17, 1918, he was a son of Laura Hutchinson Shaver of Pearisburg and the late Robert Shaver. He was the husband of the late Gladys Martin Shaver. Raymond was retired from the National Gypsum Gold Bond Plant, and attended the Evangelistic Holiness Chapel in Pembroke. In addition to his mother, he is survived by three sons, James L. Shaver of Princeton, W.Va., Roger Lee Shaver of Eggleston and Danny Dale Shaver of Bassett; two daughters, Martha J. Davidson of Pembroke and Connie Diane Towsey of Mineral; five brothers, James Shaver of Pearisburg, Bobby Shaver and Harold Shaver of Blacksburg, and Ronnie Shaver and Lee Shaver of Salem; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. SIGMON, Martha Ingram, 86, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, George N. (Son) Sigmon and a son, Morris Edward Sigmon. She was a member of the Pilot United Methodist Church in Pilot, and served as pianist there for thirty-seven years. Surviving are her husband, Frank R. Spangler; a son an d daughter-in-law, Ralph N. and Essie Spangler of Roanoke; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Robert (Bob) Cole of Salem; a number of nieces and nephews. STEFFEY, Fred Andrew, 68, of Route 1, Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, February 13, 1996, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church, where he was a church leader and a Sunday school teacher. Mr. Steffey was the owner of Southwestern Equipment in Rural Retreat. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Andrew Steffey. He is survived by his wife, Geneva Felts Steffey; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy S. and Robert G. Williams of Route 4, Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Teresa Steffey or Rural Retreat, Fred L. and Robin Steffey of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Lorri Beth Williams, Robert Kevin Williams, Andrew Kyle Steffey, and Emily Paige Steffey. TABOR, William M., 89, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday, February 13, 1996, in the Montgomery Regional Hospital. He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Ruth Reed of Roanoke, Nellie Huff, Christiansburg; several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday from the Richardson-Horne Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Richard Kingrea. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery. She was born on October 29, 1909, the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Della Bennett Hudson and was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, J. Richard and Reva Y. Hudson and her husband, Bentley H. Thurman. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Paul H. Thurman, Joseph H. and Cherold T. Thurman; two daughters, Anne T. Leggett, Penny T. A graduate of Lynchburg College, Class of 1929, she did graduate work at Roanoke College, Radford University, and the University of Virginia. Being a retired Latin and English teacher of the Franklin County Public School System, she also was a private piano teacher for 38 years. She was a member of the Rocky Mount Christian Church and also a member of the following organizations: Mother Oliver Christian Women's Fellowship, Franklin County Retired Teachers, Life Member of the Va. Education Association, Rocky Mount Woman's Club, Rocky Mount Business and Professional Women's Club, Thursday Morning Music Club, and a charter member of the Roanoke Alpha Eta Chapter (IOTA STATE) of the Delta Gamma Society, an International honor society of Women Educators. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, February 16, 1996 at Lynch Funeral H ome Chapel. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Thursday, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Lynch Funeral Home, Rocky Mount is in charge of the arrangements.

WAINWRIGHT, Estelle, E., 87, of Rocky Mount, died Monday, February 12, 1996. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Vivian Berger, Rocky Mount; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Wainwright, Rocky Mount; cousins; other relatives; and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, 1 p.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Methodist Church with Reverend Reuben Boyd officiating. Friends may call at Stanfield Mortuary Chapel on Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Interment in Franklin Memorial Park.

WELLS, Lourene Worley, 96, of Roanoke, formerly of Buchanan, passed away Monday, February 12, 1996. She was the widow of Arthur S. (Dutch) Worley and William I. Wells. Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Helen and Lee Johnson of Sandston, Va., Eva Strawn of Bedford; two granddaughters, Edie Adams and husband, Jake, of Sandston, Va., Lois Gregory of Los Angeles, Calif.; also four great-grandsons and three great-great-grandsons. A graveside service will be conducted at Fairview Cemetery, Buchanan, 10 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 1996, with the Rev. Carol Johnston officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be given to Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church, 2010 Carlisle Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231. The family will receive friends at Lotz Funeral Home, 1001 Franklin Rd., S.W., Roanoke, Va., 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, February 16.
