THE TIPOFF

TRUE COLORS: U.S. Sen. Charles Robb will speak Sunday at the Roanoke Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars' 11th annual Massing of the Colors.

The free ceremony, which includes a procession of the colors and color guards of approximately 50 civic, patriotic, military and veterans' organizations and music by the 29th Infantry Division Band, will begin at 3 p.m. at the New Life Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church on Airport Road Northwest in Roanoke. Call 384-6805.

AIRMEN HONORED: The Tuskegee Airmen, a squadron of black fighter-pilots who saw combat in World War II, will provide the theme for the Roanoke Post Offices' eighth annual Black History Celebration, Sunday from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at Eureka Park Center, 1529 Carroll Ave. N.W., Roanoke.

Arts and crafts, ethnic foods, a fashion show and other entertainment and a special commemorative T-shirt will be offered. Maj. Fred Wilson, a Tuskegee Airman, will be a special guest speaker. The event is free and open to the public.

EXCELLENT ACOUSTICS: Folk musician Tom May will perform his original works Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke. He accompanies himself on six- and 12-string guitars, Irish pennywhistle and flute. May has toured internationally with such notables as Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot.

The concert is free, but donations of $5 are suggested for people aged 12 and older. Call 342-3257.

SYMBOLIST SHORTS: Theatre Roanoke College will present "A Telling of Tales," short symbolist plays based on Celtic mythology by W. B. Yeats, Wednesday through Saturday. Often referred to as "dance plays," the works were inspired by Yeats' interest in alchemy, the occult and the masks, music and stylized movement of Japanese Noh theatre.

Performances in the college's Olin Theater begin at 8 each night. Tickets cost from $3 to $5. Call 375-2333.

MORTAL ATTRACTION: The phenomenally popular video game-movie "Mortal Kombat" will explode into an entertainment extravaganza of martial arts, special effects, laser lighting, gymnastic stunts and audience participation - with action and excitement replacing the original versions' blood-letting and gore - Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Roanoke Civic Center .

Tickets range from $9.50 to $22.50 in advance. Part of the proceeds will benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Call 981-1201.

BEAST BENEFIT A trip to New York with tickets for two to David Letterman's show, audio equipment and a golf-beach-ski resort package are just a few of the tempting items being auctioned Friday at the Radisson Patrick Henry Hotel to help raise funds for Mill Mountain Zoo.

Cocktails, heavy hors d'oeuvres and live jazz begin at 6:30 p.m.; a silent auction starts at 8. Advance tickets cost $35 per person. Call 343-3241.

MERRY MARDI GRAS: The Young Art Patrons of the Art Museum of Western Virginia will capture the spirit of a New Orleans Mardi Gras in an evening of jazz Feb. 24 at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center. Performers will include the Lenny Marcus Trio, featuring Chip McNeill; the Virginia Tech Jazz Ensemble; and Tech's vocal jazz ensemble, the New Virginians.

The dinner buffet and music, starting at 6:30 p.m., cost $30 for museum members and $40 for nonmembers. Music and light hors d'oeuvres after 8:30 p.m. cost $15 for members, $20 for nonmembers. Call 342-5760.
