A Bedford County woman who police say was having a sexual relationship with her teen-age foster son was arrested Thursday and charged with sexual battery.
The woman, a 32-year-old farmworker who lives in Forest, was charged with four felony counts of sexual battery and unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor. She also was charged with one count of taking indecent liberties with a minor.
According to Lt. John McCane of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, she is accused of having an ongoing sexual relationship with the boy that was discovered by social services workers. The boy had been living with her for several months.
The boy is not from Bedford County.
Prospective foster parents go through an approval process that includes a criminal background check.
"We do our best to screen people," said Leighton Langford, director of the Bedford County Department of Social Services said. "But you can't look inside somebody's head. [Her] history did not suggest that this would occur. We don't have a way to read people's hearts and minds, unfortunately."
