GEORGE WYTHE FORCES HOGOHEEGEE PLAYOFF

George Wythe beat John Battle 48-31 on Friday to force a playoff game against Lebanon today for the Hogoheegee District boys' basketball title.

Justin Borne paced the Maroons with 10 points.

George Wythe (16-4 overall, 13-3 district) will take on Lebanon, which beat Northwood 66-39 on Friday, at 6 p.m. at PH-Glade Spring.

Jon Hall led John Battle with 11 points.

Bland 77, Fort Chiswell 69: The Rockets hit 10 3-pointers and shot 50 percent (29 of 58) from the field en route to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Pioneers in Bland.

John Thompson hit five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points. Lee Meadows added 21 points, including four 3-pointers, and five steals for Bland. Smokey Parmenter finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Rockets led 37-27 at halftime but Fort Chiswell rallied, going on a 9-0 run in the last 1:30 of the third quarter to take a 51-48 lead. The teams played closely throughout the fourth quarter before Bland, leading 65-64 with 2:30 to go, went on a 6-0 run to pull away.

T.J. King scored 22 points for Fort Chiswell. Anthony Watson had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Brad Hughes added 14 points and Heath Bralley chipped in 11.

Thursday's game

Covington Boys' Home 63, Massanutten Military Academy 57: Chris Hampton scored 21 points to lead four players in double figures as the Boys' Home improved its record to 12-12 with a win over Massanutten Military Academy.

Nebiyu Naod added 16 points, Sean Riddick 14 and Michael Harvey 11 as the Boys' Home withstood a rally in the fourth quarter.

Massanutten Military Academy (8-10) tied the score at 50-50 in the final stanza, but couldn't take the lead. Naod had eight points in the final quarter and the team was 6-of-6 from the free throw line to seal the win.
