MTV Networks announced Tuesday that Herb Scannell has been named president of Nickelodeon, the No. 1-rated basic cable network.
Scannell, who has been executive vice president of Nickelodeon Network and U.S. Television, succeeds Geraldine Laybourne, who was named president of Disney/ABC Cable Networks.
Scannell had been her top aide over the past eight years, according to Nickelodeon sources.
Scannell will be responsible for all creative and business operations at Nickelodeon, both domestically and internationally. This includes all activities of Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite and a new network, Nick at Nite's TV Land, which will launch in April.
MTV chairman and CEO Tom Freston, who has been overseeing operation of the children's network since Laybourne left, also announced that Jeff Dunn has been named to the newly created position of chief operating officer, Nickelodeon. He had been executive vice president, strategy and business development.
CBS Entertainment says both ``Can't Hurry Love'' and ``High Society,'' which conclude their season on Feb. 26, remain in the running for next fall's schedule. They'll be replaced by ``Almost Perfect'' and the new ``Good Company.''
Bill Moyers is back at NBC News after a carefully monitored recovery from heart trouble, and though his big duties this fall will be in connection with the presidential election, he's already at work on a documentary about the Oklahoma City bombing that will probably air sometime around the April 19 anniversary of the tragedy.
