PREPARE THYSELF! TAX MAN COMETH NOTE: BELOW

Thank goodness it's a leap year.

Although the April 15 tax-filing deadline is still eight weeks off, every day counts.

Today, The Roanoke Times begins a six-part series of stories and tips designed to make meeting that deadline a bit easier. The series runs every Monday through March 25 on the Money Page.

In addition, the Money Page also will feature through April 8 the annual Tax Questions feature, which includes questions from our readers answered by area members of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.

So get out your pencil, calculator and tax forms. And if you get stumped, write us for help.

In the meantime, here's a checklist of tasks you'll need to accomplish by the stroke of midnight April 15:

File income-tax returns (Form 1040) and pay any tax due.

File gift tax return (Form 709) and pay any tax due.

Apply for a federal four-month filing extension (Form 4868).

Pay at least the balance owed to the IRS, however. Extensions push back the deadline to file - not the deadline to pay.

Pay the final installment of deferred 1993 federal taxes. (Use Form 8841.)

Pay first-quarter 1995 estimated taxes.

Make your 1995 contribution to an IRA or Keogh self-employment retirement plan. (If you file for a federal extension, you can put off your Keogh contribution until Aug. 15.)

Amend or claim a refund on your 1992 federal return before the three-year statute of limitations expires. If you filed for an extension in 1992, amend by Aug. 15.
