A Giles County teen-ager apparently jumped to her death Sunday afternoon from a bridge over the New River near Pembroke.
Divers from Giles and Montgomery counties searched for the girl for about two hours after receiving the call at 4:22 p.m., said Capt. Steve Davis of the Giles County Lifesaving and Rescue Squad. The Roanoke Times is not publishing her name because it was not known if her family had been notified.
A friend of the victim told relatives she saw the girl jump from Commissary Hill bridge.
A state police helicopter found what authorities believe to be the girl's body caught in an eddy about three-fourths of a mile downstream from the 40-foot-high bridge.
Because extremely cold temperatures made it difficult for divers to stay in the water, rescue crews plan to recover the body this morning, Davis said.
They knew there was no chance of resuscitating the girl after she had been in the water for almost an hour, Davis said. The girl's name has not been released.
