HEARING TODAY ON 'SICK' BUILDING REDEVELOPMENT

A public hearing will be held today on plans to renovate a structure Virginia Tech abandoned five years ago as a so-called "sick building." The hearing will involve plans to house the New River Valley Community Services Board in the University City Office Building.

The Radford-based Mountain Empire Services of the Southwest Inc., a nonprofit corporation, is seeking up to $1.6 million in revenue bonds through the Montgomery County Industrial Development Authority to buy, renovate and equip the building.

Mountain Empire Services, in turn, plans to lease the 43,000-square-foot building, located at 700 University City Blvd. next to the Capri Twin movie theaters, to the New River Valley Community Services Board.

The Montgomery County IDA will hold the public hearing at 11:30 a.m. in the Montgomery room of the Blacksburg Marriott Hotel, 900 Prices Fork Road, located next to the building in question.

Tech moved 200 employees out of the building and gave up its lease in the spring of 1991 after complaints from workers about headaches, fatigue and respiratory problems they believed were caused by a lack of fresh-air circulation in the tightly sealed, energy-efficient building.
