Hunter Hoggatt would not let Staunton River lose Monday night in the first round of the Seminole District basketball tournament in Moneta.
Hoggatt pumped in 52 points - including 30 on 3-point goals - as the Golden Eagles outlasted Appomattox 93-90 in overtime.
The district scoring leader had 20 points in the fourth quarter and sent the game into overtime tied at 81 by sinking three free throws with two seconds left in regulation after being fouled on a 3-point shot. He drilled four 3-pointers in the final 1:28 of the fourth quarter.
Hoggatt totaled nine points in overtime for Staunton River (9-11), which advances to play Liberty tonight at 6:30 at the Vines Center in Lynchburg. Jeff English added 15 points for the Golden Eagles.
Appomattox (7-13) got 36 points from Lindsay Fleshman.
In other games:
Blacksburg 70, Carroll County 68, 2OT: Mike Davis scored five consecutive points in the second overtime as the Indians beat the Cavaliers in a New River District game in Hillsville.
Carroll County had chances to win at the end of regulation and in the second overtime, but missed shots each time.
Jeremy Ogle led Carroll County with 22 points and Ryan Morris added 12.
Franklin County 64, Pulaski County 59: The Eagles hit seven 3-pointers to stop the Cougars in a Roanoke Valley District game in Dublin.
Jeremy Adkins scored 14 points, including a pair of 3s, for Franklin County. Brad McCall hit three 3-pointers, including one from midcourt at the halftime buzzer, and had 13 points.Jamar McNair had a game-high 20 points and five assists for the Cougars.
The teams will meet again tonight.
Narrows 65, Grayson County 46: Seniors Robbie Stafford and Bryan Pruett combined for 28 points and 16 rebounds as the Green Wave washed out the Blue Devils in a Mountain Empire District game in Narrows. Stafford finished with 10 points and Pruett 18. Joe Shipbaugh added 22 points for the Green Wave (8-12, 4-6).
Brian McDonald scored 11 points for Grayson County (17-3, 7-3).
Galax 52, Bland 33: The Maroon Tide outscored the Rockets 17-2 in the first quarter and never looked back in rolling to a Mountain Empire District victory in Bland.
Jeff Ross scored 13 points and Nate Noel added 10 for Galax, which held Bland to two field goals in the first half. John Thompson led the Rockets with nine points.
Bath County 87, Highland 66: The Rockets hit a school-record 10 3-pointers en route to a Pioneer District victory over the Rams in Monterey.
David Buzzard scored eight of his 18 points in the first quarter as Bath County (15-3, 8-3) raced to a 23-14 lead. Highland never got closer than seven or eight points the rest of the game.
Jon Rogers hit four 3-pointers and scored 22 points for the Rockets.
Timmy Harold scored 10 of his 21 points in the first quarter for Highland (8-10, 5-7).
Roanoke Valley Christian 86, Carlisle 65: Joel Nester scored a game-high 31 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, as the Eagles handed the visiting Chiefs their first Virginia Independent Conference loss.
Nester hit 14 of 16 from the free-throw line in the game, including six in the final quarter for RVC (16-5, 10-3).
Lamont Franklin scored 24 points, Bryant Redd 17 and Joseph McClinton 15 for Carlisle (20-2, 13-1).
Chatham 56, Martinsville 52: The Cavaliers stole the ball and scored twice in the last 10 seconds to upset the Bulldogs in the first round of the Piedmont District tournament in Bassett.
Chatham, the No.10 seed, led 24-12 at halftime before Martinsville rallied in the fourth quarter to take the lead. The seventh-seeded Bulldogs were holding for the last shot when Henri Fitzgerald stole the ball and scored. On Martinsville's next possession, Chatham again stole the ball and scored.
Fitzgerald led Chatham with a game-high 29 points. Rasheem Penn scored 15 points for Martinsville and Isaac Gravely added 11.
Chatham will face Magna Vista tonight at 7 at Bassett.
Oak Hill Academy 66, Atlantic Shores Christian 49: In Mouth of Wilson, Ricardo Crumble led a trio of double-figure scorers for the Warriors as they defeated the top-ranked team in the state private schools Division I poll.
Crumble had 18 points and nine rebounds, Steve Jackson added 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Randy Barnes contributed 15 points and eight rebounds for Oak Hill (27-4).
Kenny Inge led Atlantic Shores Christian (19-2) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Chris Jackson had 10 for the visitors from Virginia Beach.
Oak Hill, ranked 14th in the USA Today poll, will face Long Island (N.Y.) Lutheran at 7 p.m. today at Pulaski County High School in Dublin.
Girls
Pulaski County 73, Patrick Henry 29: Katrina Williams hit 19 points and had eight steals as the Cougars coasted past the Patriots to lock up a share of the Roanoke Valley District title.
Pulaski County (14-6, 10-2) will meet Cave Spring, a 56-48 winner over William Fleming, at Franklin County at 6 p.m. today in a playoff game that will settle the title and one of two RVD spots in the Northwest Region tournament.
Patrick Henry (1-17, 1-11) also plays at Franklin County tonight at 7:30 in a first-round Roanoke Valley District tournament game.
