ANDERSON, Ms. Lula E. Conner, of Shawsville, has planted her last garden in this earth. Born March 29, 1908, to Arlene V. Susie Thomas and Lemuel Conner, she was proud to be a sister to five brothers, Shelton, Earl, Noel, Aaron and Calvin Conner. She was the mother to Nancy Victoria Dillon, Louaddie Lowder, Robert Bryant Anderson, Jr., Sallie Rebecca Sears, and John M. Anderson. She was the grandmother to Paula Ross, Cindy Fielder Ross, Sandra Smallwood, David (``Sonny"") Smallwood, Susan Smallwood Snyder, Angie Anderson, Vickie Pris Sears, Allen Anderson, Edie Sears, Adam Anderson, Andee Sears, and Brandy Anderson. She lived a simple life and loved visiting family, making quilts, gardening, cooking and going to church and singing the old hymns. The Visitation will be Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Oakey's in Salem. On Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakey's Chapel in Salem we will sing ``Amazing Grace"" with her one last time. Following funeral services, she will be buried beside her husband, Robert Bryant Anderson, in Cedar Lawn Cemetery. She always said to her children and grandchildren ""An education is the best thing you can get for yourself."" Instead of sending flowers, she would wish contributions be made to the ""Lula Conner Anderson Scholarship"", Premier Bank, Shawsville, Va. 24162, to help a deserving Shawsville High School student go to college.

ATKINS, Alexander J., (``Sam""), T/Sgt., USAF (ret.), 61, of Sumter, S.C., died Monday, February 19, 1996. Military graveside services 11 a.m. Friday, Mountain Home National Cemetery, Tennessee. Arrangements by Campbell Funeral Home, Abingdon, Va.

BEARD, James Garland, of Charlottesville, died Saturday, February 17, 1996. He was born in Vinton on April 22, 1915, the son of the late Anne Preas Beard and John Wesley Beard. He graduated from Vinton High School and in 1938 from Virginia Military Institute with a degree in civil engineering. He was a World War II veteran, earning the rank of major with the 727th Railway Battalion in Africa and Europe. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government. After military service, Mr. Beard re-joined Southern Railway. He was superintendent of railways in Birmingham, Richmond, and Charlottesville before leaving Southern in 1964 to join U.S. Steel Corporation as general manager of railroads for its mining operator in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela. He retired in 1981 and lived in Richmond and Charlottesville. He is survived by his wife, Mary Edith Gill Beard; and his children, Mary Beard Montgomery, Williamson, Ga., Patricia Beard Sprouse, Reston, and James Gill Beard, Suffolk. He is also survived by a sister and brother, Atlas Beard Farris and Louis Beard, both of Vinton; and six grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 21, 1996 at 11 a.m. at Hill and Wood Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Richard B. Fairs officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to VMI Foundation, Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va. 24450.

BOWER, Dewey F. 92, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday, February 20, 1996 in a Roanoke Nursing Home. He was a member of the Grace Assembly of God and was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Thompson Bower. Surviving are one daughter, Betty B. Hogan, Roanoke; one grandson, Jay Hogan, Roanoke. She was born in Bedford County on June 17, 1923, a daughter of the late Herbert Charles Waldron and Hester Frances Bowyer Waldron. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Henry Hampton Bowyer; two sons, Robert Herbert Bowyer, Roanoke, Charles Hampton Bowyer, Arlington; a sister, Pearl Susan Foster, Bedford; a brother, Bernard Otey Waldron, Thaxton; two grandsons, Christopher E. CONDON, Mildred Garretson, 77, of Marion, died Sunday, February 18, 1996, at her home in Marion. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael M. Condon; her father and mother, Guy G. Sr. and Clara Leedy Garretson; two sisters, Genelle Garretson, Geraldine G. Hall; and one broth er, Guy G. Garretson Jr. She is survived by one brother, Eldridge R. GARDNER, Roy Jerome, 83 of Rt. 1, Box 42, Fancy Gap, Va., widower of the late Nellie Amburn Gardner, died Sunday morning, February 18, 1996 in Clifton Forge, Va. Mr. Gardner was born November 27, 1912 in Carroll County, Va., son of the late Abner Gardner, Jr., and the late Mollie Akers Gardner, was a retired Supervisor for Wiley Jackson Construction Company of Roanoke, Va., was past master of Hillsville Masonic Lodge #193 A.F. & A. M., and was a charter member and deacon of Independence Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ila Mae Montgomery of Roanoke, Va., Mrs. Carol Ann Terrell and husband, Everette of Richmond, Va., and Mrs. Helen G. Deisher Fox and husband, Isaac of Clifton Forge, Va.; three grandsons, Ron Montgomery of Roanoke, Va., Roy M. Terrell of Richmond, Va. and Ray B. Deisher of Covington, Va.; two great-granddaughters, Stephanie Marie Terrell and Laurin Carol Terrell, both of Richmond, Va.; three brothers, Lester Gardner and Lewis Gardner, both of Fancy Gap, Va. and Olen Gardner of Riner, Va. GRUBB, Richard E. ""Dickie"", 54, of 890 W. 16th St., Wytheville, died Sunday, February 18, 1996 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital Rehab Center. He was an employee for the Town of Wytheville for the past 26 years where he was the Superintendent of Signs and Cemetery. He was a member of the West End United Methodist Church, Wytheville Fire Dept. and the Wytheville Lions Club. He is survived by his parents, Imogene Neff and Peyton Archer, of Wytheville; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Will Edwards, of Roanoke, Delores and Barry Nelms, of Corolla, N.C., Barbara Coffman, of Staunton, Va., Scarlet Hunter, of Hillsville, Va.; one brother, T. HILT, Edward Blake, 79, of Tannersville, died Monday, February 19, 1996 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. He was a lifelong resident of Tannersville and was active in civic and community affairs. He was a farmer and had also taught Agriculture and Veteran's Classes at Rich Valley High School. He was a member of the Rich Valley Farmer's Club and a supporter of the Rich Valley Fair Association. Mr. Hilt was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Air Force. He was a member of Crabtree Chapel United Methodist Church, where he had served faithfully in numerous capacities. He was a devoted husband and father. Mr. Hilt was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Mrs. Mary Alice Phipps Hilt. Survivors include two sons, Donald E. Hilt and Ralph T. Hilt, both of Tannersville; one daughter-in-law, Sandra S. Hilt, Tannersville; one granddaughter, Molly E. Hilt, Tannersville; three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Ruth) Ringstaff, Abingdon, Mrs. Charles (Elsie) Yost, Granite Falls, N.C., Mrs. Abe (Georgia) Ellis, Johnson City, Tenn.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rhudy (Evelyn) Hilt, Abingdon, Mrs. Charles (Ayleen) Hilt, Fort Collins, CO. JOHNSON, Leola Marcroft, 67, of Athens, W.Va., died Sunday, February 18, 1996 in a Princeton hospital. Born in Portland, Maine November 19, 1928, she was the daughter of the late John and Via Leland Marcroft. She was a retired correspondent with the Beckley Register Herald and the Princeton Times. She was a member of the Concord United Methodist Church in Athens. She was a 1946 graduate of Princeton High School and a 1950 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Concord College, where she was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. She had been a resident of this area since 1942, moving here from Schenectady, N.Y. She was preceded in death by one brother, John Leland Marcroft. Survivors include her husband, Edward Jack Johnson of Athens; three sons, Edward J. Johnson Jr. of Yorktown, John Leland Johnson of Radford, and William Conner Johnson of Lewisburg; five granddaughters, Rachael Johnson, Rebecca Johnson, Kelly Johnson, Christine Johnson, and Erin Johnson. A Prayer Service will be conducted 8:30 p.m. today at the George W. Seaver Funeral Home Chapel in Princeton, with the Rev. W. Brent Sturm, O.S.L., officiating. KARNEY, Lucia, 82, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 1996. She was an accountant for Binsky & Snider Contractors for many years and was a long-time member of Polish Arts Club. MINICHAN, David Parrish, 95, of Roanoke, died Monday, February 19, 1996, in South Roanoke Nursing Home. Mr. Minichan, the son of the late David I. and Mary Elizabeth Francis Minichan, was educated in the public schools of Roanoke, after which he earned a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from V.P.I. In 1924, he married Harriett C. Hogan, who survives him. Mr. Minichan was hired by Appalachian Power Co. in 1930, in Roanoke, served as District Manager in Pulaski, Division Manager in Bluefield, W.Va., before retiring in 1966 from the Roanoke Division. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Mrs. Carl (Barbara) Sherertz of Roanoke, David P. (Tosca) Minichan Jr., M.D., of Roanoke, and Mrs. Hayes (Harriet) Thomas of Charlotte, N.C.; and grandchildren, John David (Jay) Sherertz, Mary Claiborne Frye, Caty S. Joppich, David Minichan III, Mary M. Toler, Hayes Thomas Jr., Robert Thomas, and Harriet Byrd Thomas. Also surviving are a sister, Mary L. Minichan; and a sister-in-law, Jeanne M. Hogan, both of Roanoke. Mr. Minichan was a member of South Roanoke United Methodist Church, and the Sons of the American Revolution. He has been active in many civic and professional organizations. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel on Wednesday, February 21, at 1:30 p.m. with Dr. Donald H. Roberts and Dr. M. Douglas Newman officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. It has been suggested that memorials be made to a charity of your choice.

MOTLEY, James H., 57, of Troutville, died Monday, February 19, 1996. He was preceded in death by his mother Roena Mottley, a son, Randy Motley, and a brother Clinton Mottley. He is survived by his wife, Thelma L. Motley; father, Everette T. WILLIAMS, Gabrielle Leigh, infant daughter of Brad and Marta Williams of Hopewell, died Monday, February 19, 1996 in John Randolph Hospital, Hopewell, Va. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, Martin and Rebecca Quesenberry of Richmond; paternal grandparents, Jeff and Denise Tudor of Hopewell; uncles, Chad Quesenberry of Richmond and Justin Williams of Hopewell; great-grandfathers, Floyd Quesenberry of Hillsville and Lawrence Wright of Collinsville; and a host of loving great-aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Chesterfield Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Chester, Va. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, Va. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home
