ROANOKE CONTINUES TOURNEY DOMINANCE

Roanoke College won its 16th straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament game Thursday with an 84-51 first-round victory over Virginia Wesleyan at the Salem Civic Center.

The Maroons' streak dates to the 1991 first round and their average margin of victory over that time is 18.5 points. Junior center Amy Athey (Cave Spring High School) scored 16 points to lead four Roanoke players in double figures. Five Maroons played at least 20 minutes. ``It was our best game in a long time,'' said Roanoke coach Susan Dunagan.

Roanoke faces Guilford in the second semifinal game today at 2:30 p.m. Randolph-Macon meets Emory & Henry in the 12:30 p.m. game.

In other games Thursday:

Randolph-Macon 79, Randolph-Macon Woman's College 52: Aimee Beightol scored 18 points and dished out eight assists as the No.1 seeded Yellow Jackets overcame a 32.4-percent shooting performance.

R-MC's Jenn Kohler chipped in 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Jennifer Jensen led the Wildcats with 24 points. Randolph-Macon Woman's College was making its first tournament appearance in the past five seasons.

Emory & Henry 80, Eastern Mennonite 70: Sophomore guard Angie Simpkins scored a game-high 21 points as the Wasps advanced to the semifinal round. Senior forward Jackie Greene (Galax) added a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

There were seven lead changes in the second half before Simpkins gave Emory & Henry the lead for good on a 3-pointer with 9:27 to play.

Guilford 65, Bridgewater 52: The Quakers overcame a 9-of-47 (19.1 percent) first-half shooting performance to send the Eagles to a loss. It was the final game of Bridgewater coach Laura Mapp's 35-year career.

The Eagles shot a season-low 18.5 percent in the second half.

Sophomore Laura Haynes led the Quakers with 14 points. Bridgewater's Christie Osborne (Lord Botetourt) led all scorers with 15.
