Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys will perform Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Virginia Tech's Old Dominion Ballroom of Squires Student Center. The concert features traditional bluegrass music.
Stanley, of the original Stanley Brothers, has been playing old-time bluegrass for 50 years. Born in rural Southwest Virginia, Stanley learned at an early age how to play banjo. His mother was his teacher.
In the early '40s, Ralph and his brother, Carter, became the Stanley Brothers, playing on local radio stations and throughout the South. Following Carter Stanley's death in 1966, Ralph Stanley continued to perform bluegrass music and went on to form his current band, The Clinch Mountain Boys.
Thursday's concert at Virginia Tech is sponsored by the university's Alternative Sounds Committee. General admission seating is $6 for the public and $3 for Tech students. Tickets will be available at the door, starting at 6:30 p.m.
