HUFTON LEADS MAROONS TO VICTORY

Roanoke College senior guard Marcee Hufton scored a team-high 19 points and had eight rebounds Friday as the Maroons slipped past Guilford 78-70 in the semifinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament at the Salem Civic Center.

Hufton, a graduate of William Byrd High School and first-team all-ODAC selection, was 5-of-9 from 3-point range and also made three big steals, including one that virtually locked up the game with 28.4 seconds left.

``She does what she has to do - whether it's making a pass or making a steal or making a basket - or she'll die trying,'' said Maroons coach Susan Dunagan.

Roanoke (21-5) returns to the championship final for the 13th time. It faces top seed Randolph-Macon (25-1) today at 2 p.m. The Maroons have won the past six tournament titles.

Junior center Amy Athey (Cave Spring) scored 15 points and had eight rebounds for Roanoke. All-ODAC first-teamer Laura Haynes led the Quakers (18-8) with 30 points and 11 rebounds.

In the other semifinal:

Randolph-Macon 70, Emory & Henry 66: Cave Spring graduate Amy Beightol had a career-high 27 points for the Yellow Jackets, but her most important play may have come on defense. The freshman guard stole the ball from Emory & Henry's Katie Brann with 47 seconds to play and R-MC up 65-63. The Wasps were playing for a lead, but instead, Beightol converted a layup to leave them down four, 67-63, with 46 seconds to go.

Beightol finished with seven steals, six assists and nine rebounds.

Emory & Henry was without first-round leading scorer Angie Simpkins (Auburn), who broke a toe going after a loose ball in the Wasps' game Thursday. Jackie Greene (Galax) led Emory & Henry (14-12) with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
