A James Madison University student remained in critical condition Friday after being diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis.
Kathryn S. Senner, 22, a senior health sciences major from Arlington, was taken to the emergency room at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, then to the University of Virginia Hospital, on Wednesday.
Students who live in her apartment building at 437 S. Mason St. were asked to report to the University Health Center. Antibiotics may be administered to those who have had close contact with Senner.
Senner was listed in critical condition Friday night, according to a hospital spokesman.
Symptoms of meningitis include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck and skin rash; and students experiencing any of these are asked to report to the University Health Center or Rockingham Memorial.
"While it can be contagious, it is extremely rare for it to be spread," said Fred Hilton, JMU spokesman.
The university has set up a hot line to handle questions. Call (540)924-2113.
