THE VIRGINIA PRESS ASSOCIATION awarded the Times 15 times, including six first-place prizes.
The Roanoke Times won 15 awards in the annual Virginia Press Association contest for writing, photography, art and page design.
Six of the awards were first places.
Mary Bishop placed first in the home and leisure writing category for her look at the effect of teens frequenting the Roanoke City Market in "Somewhere to hang."
Mike Hudson's series on the loan industry called ``Borrowing trouble'' took first in the investigative or in-depth reporting category.
Three photographers won top honors: Don Petersen won the spot news category for a wildfire photograph; Alan Kim, a photographer for the New River Valley bureau, won the general news category for a photo called ``Tug of war;'' and former employee Victor W. Vaughan won the personality or portrait category for photographs of a boat captain and his boat. Vaughan also won a second place for spot news photography for images he captured after a toddler drowned.
Photographer Eric Brady took third in the personality or portrait photo category for a photograph of an avid collector of '50s memorabilia.
The special section and design category was won by design desk editor Tim Van Riper and photographer Keith Graham for their combined effort on several sections.
Betty Strother earned a second-place award in editorial writing for three editorials: "Hyping Miss Virginia,'' ``Saving the countryside'' and ``Prison bar.''
Feature writer Mark Morrison won second place for critical writing for reviews and concerts in the Roanoke region.
The teamwork of sportswriters Ralph Berrier, Jack Bogaczyk, James C. Black and Randy King to cover the Miami vs. Virginia Tech football game led to a third place in sports event writing.
Doug Doughty won a third in the sports feature writing category for a story called ``Junior Burrough.''
Copy editor Peggy Bier and design desk editor Marty Horne worked together for their third place in the business and financial or agriculture page design.
David M. Poole won third in the feature series or continuing story for his series of articles on the Haysom murders in Lynchburg.
Hudson and Cathryn McCue won third in series of news stories for their work on ``The Allen agenda.''
