CHIEFS RIP EXPRESS, WIN 7-2 JOHNSTOWN GOALIE TURNS ASIDE 42 SHOTS

Peter Skudra stopped 42 of 44 shots Saturday night, including five breakaways, in leading the Johnstown Chiefs to a 7-2 East Coast Hockey League victory over the Roanoke Express.

Skudra stopped four breakaways in the second period and was stellar in denying multiple Express quality chances throughout the game.

Jeff Mead led the Chiefs attack with five points on two goals and three assists.

Johnstown opened the scoring in the second period when defender Ted Russell one-timed a Billy Tibbets corner feed through Express goaltender Matt DelGuidice with Michael Smith off for hooking.

The Chiefs' four-goal explosion continued midway through the middle period, as Alexander Savchenkov followed his own shot in behind the Express net, walked out in the slot and beat DelGuidice high over the glove at 10:14 for a 2-0 lead. The softest goal of the night was Mead's left wing wrist shot that eluded the screened DelGuidice at 16:03 for a 3-0 lead. Finally, Don Parsons beat DelGuidice on a breakaway with the teams skating at four-on-four.

Roanoke's total of 17 second-period shots was just one fewer than it had the entire game Friday in a loss at Toledo.

Dave Holum finally broke through on Skudra late in the second, and his third rebound over the fallen goaltender gave the Express life at 18:40, trailing 4-1 after two periods.

Roanoke's final goal was scored on a right point power-play blast by Dave Stewart.

Express right wing Jason Clarke suffered a second-degree separated shoulder in the second period after colliding with Johnstown defenseman Russell into the end boards, and is listed as day-to-day.

ICE CHIPS: The Express scratched Mike Stacchi and Chris Tschupp. ... Roanoke's five-game road swing continues tonight in Erie, Pa.
