RVC GIRLS EARN BLUE RIDGE TITLE

Freshman Gina Guthrie scored 21 points to lead three players in double figures as Roanoke Valley Christian knocked off Grace Christian 61-44 on Saturday to win the Blue Ridge Conference girls' basketball tournament championship game at Roanoke Catholic.

The championship was the Eagles first ever title in any girls' sport.

Guthrie had seven steals to go with her 21 points. Freshman Rebecca Bryant added 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Rebecca Lockhart chipped in 10 for the Eagles (19-2).

Grace Christian was led by Krista Summers, who scored 21 points, and Erica Wall, who added 10.

Lynchburg Christian 38, Roanoke Catholic 28: The Bulldogs held on to defeat the Celtics in the consolation game of the Blue Ridge Conference tournament.

Teresa Monsour finished her career with a big game for Roanoke Catholic (10-11). The senior captain had 10 points, eight rebounds, eight steals and three assists. Diane Norman led Lynchburg Christian with 16 points and teammate Alyssa Carr added 12.

Pioneer boys

Bath County 54, Glenvar 41: Cory Wolfe scored eight of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and Bath County held Glenvar to only 28 percent field-goal shooting as the Chargers stunned the Highlanders en route to their first Pioneer District tournament championship in Clifton Forge.

The Chargers (19-3), who lost to Glenvar twice during the regular season, set a school record for wins and snapped Glenvar's 10-game winning streak.

Bath County held Glenvar to only 12 first-half points before Glenvar stormed back to tie the score at 28 after three quarters. The Chargers made 10 of 12 free throws in fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Wolfe made four of five free throws and finished with 15 rebounds as the Chargers outrebounded the taller Highlanders 27-22.

Jon Rodgers led Bath County with a game-high 17 points.

Glenvar (16-6) was led by Josh Williamson, who scored 14 points, and Chris Evans, who added 10.
