JESSE M. LAWRENCE III has been named general manager of Virginia Varsity Transfer, a local and long-distance moving corporation based in Roanoke. Formerly a supervisor, Lawrence has been with the company since 1991. He will oversee scheduling, payroll, resource allocation and customer service.
Founded in 1988, the moving company offers professional services by student athletes trained for corporate, office and residential moves.
ACCOUNTING
JONATHAN L. ELDER has joined the firm of KPMG Peat Marwick as tax director. He previously was a tax senior manager with Price Waterhouse in Atlanta. Also, CATHERINE C. IWICKI has joined the firm as a tax manager. She formerly was a federal tax manager with The Travelers Group Inc. in Baltimore, Md.
PATTY McCOY-STRAIN has joined McLeod & Co. certified public accountants as an accountant specializing in employee benefits. She has more than 12 years of experience in employee benefit design and administration with a bank and a law firm. CYNDY MUSCATELLO also has joined the firm. She will assist clients in tax planning and compliance issues. ROB MARTIN, formerly an intern with the company, has joined McLeod & Co. as an accountant. He previously worked on the internal audit staff at NationsBank.
BANKING
CAROL ANN BONDURANT has been elected to the board of directors and promoted to senior vice president of Bank Services of Virginia, a service organization for Patrick Henry National Bank, First National Bank of Rocky Mount, Blue Ridge Bank, South Boston Bank, Peoples Bank of Danville, Patriot Bank and the Mortgage Co. of Va. Bondurant, who has been with the company in Oak Level since 1985, will be responsible for the operation of the bookkeeping, proof, research, personnel and marketing departments. JOHNNIE L. JONES has been elected to the board of Bank Services of Virginia, where he has been senior vice president since 1986. He also is vice president and director of the Mortgage Co. of Va. and is senior loan administrator for the banks served by Bank Services of Virginia. BRADFORD M. KENDRICK, who has been with the company since 1985, has been promoted to vice president and data processing manager. MARTHA COX has been promoted to corporate secretary for Bank Services of Virginia and the Mortgage Co. of Va. She has been with Bank Services since 1985.
WILLIAM S. CLARK has been named chief executive officer of The First Bank of Stuart. Clark most recently was vice president of operations with Southwest Virginia Savings Bank in Roanoke. He began his career at Southwest as a management trainee in 1978, became a branch manager in 1979, was promoted to assistant vice president, branch coordinator and consumer loan officer in 1985 and was elected vice president in 1989. He was on the board of MainStreet BankGroup Inc., parent company of both banks, in 1995.
A.J. MELTON of Martinsville has been named consumer services manager at Piedmont Trust Bank. Melton joined the bank in 1990 and was promoted to consumer loan officer in 1993. In his new position, he will manage the collection department and oversee loan workouts, foreclosures and bankruptcies in addition to other duties.
COMMUNICATIONS
CLAUDE L. GUNN, a principal of Sonship Graphics Inc. near Forest, has been elected president of National Alliance of Print Communications, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit corporation composed of black professionals engaged in the field of printed communications.
FINANCIAL SERVICES
JAMES L. CHISOM has joined the Roanoke office of Richmond-based Davenport & Co. of Virginia Inc. as vice president. He previously was a registered representative with Merrill Lynch. Chisom has more than 11 years of experience in the financial services industry, including 4 1/2 years in public accounting.
HEALTH CARE
WILLIAM D. BESTPITCH has joined Family Service of Roanoke Valley as program supervisor for Families First, an in-home counseling services program. He formerly was coordinator of a residential treatment program operated by Blue Ridge Community Services for emotionally disturbed children.
LAW
STEPHEN B. HEBBLETHWAITE has become associated with Lutins Shapiro & Kurtin in the general practice of law. He is working in the firm's Roanoke office.
MANUFACTURING
SUZANNE H. WOOD has been elected vice president and chief financial officer of Tultex Corp. in Martinsville and will be responsible for accounting and treasury functions. Wood joined Tultex as controller for the company's activewear division in 1993 and later that year was named corporate controller. Prior to joining Tultex, she was employed by the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse, where she held various positions including audit senior manager when she left in 1993.
The Lane division of The Lane Co. Inc. has promoted RANDY GAUGERT, casegoods merchandise manager in Rocky Mount, to vice president. Gaugert joined Lane in 1992 as upholstery merchandise manager and was promoted to his present position in 1993.
ORGANIZATIONS
LINDA M. MOODY of Friendship Manor in Roanoke has been elected treasurer of the Virginia Apartment and Management Association. DEBBIE MORGAN of Stonemark Management in Blacksburg has been elected secretary of the organization. New directors include GLENNA BANNISTER, Enterprise Investment, Roanoke; and SHERILL HARRIS, Roanoke Street Apartments, Blacksburg. Moody also received the 1995 President's Award for outstanding contributions to the association.
RETAIL
RICK WILLIAMS has been named manager of Quality Stores Inc.'s new Quality Farm & Fleet store in Martinsville. Williams was promoted from inventory manager at Quality's Wheeling, W.Va., store. The new store, scheduled to open in mid-March, will offer hardware, automotive, clothing, power equipment, pet supplies and agricultural items.
TRAVEL AND TOURISM
CATHERINE FOX of the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau has been elected president-elect of the Shenandoah Valley Travel Association. CARL TOLLEY, attractions manager for Natural Bridge of Virginia, has been elected vice president for the Southern region of the association.
