VMI took first place in the Southern Conference Indoor Track Championships held in Lexington on Saturday.
The Keydets trailed Marshall after the first day of competition, but after winning three of the top six places in the 35-pound weight throw, VMI took the lead and never trailed again. The Keydets scored points in eight of the 11 finals.
Eric Gay won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.38 seconds. Obi Ezekewe won the triple jump with a distance of 48 feet, 1 3/4 inches.
VMI's depth was the key to its victory, as at least two Keydets placed in six of the 10 individual finals.
VMI scored 126 points to East Tennessee State's 93. Marshall was third with 87, followed by Tennessee-Chattanooga (83), Appalachian State (64), Western Carolina (41), The Citadel (2) and Davidson (0).
COLLEGES Cavaliers upset Sun Devils
Justin Counts drove in three runs, two coming on a sixth-inning homer, as Virginia beat Arizona State 7-4 in a baseball game in Tempe, Ariz
It was just the third loss in 14 games this season for the Sun Devils, who beat Virginia 17-3 Friday night in the series opener.
Counts' homer, his second of the year, staked the Cavaliers to a 5-1 lead.
Jason Sekany pitched the final 2 1-3 innings to get his first save and preserve the win for starter Seth Greisinger (1-0).
Arizona State starter Widd Workman (1-1) took the loss.
Washington and Lee used a four-run fifth inning to break open a tight game and defeat Maryville 10-5 in the consolation game of the Savannah College of Art & Design baseball tournament. The Generals are 2-3.
Washington and Lee started the season off right with a 17-1 thrashing of Guilford in an ODAC men's lacrosse game in Greensboro.
Ande Jenkins scored six goals for the Generals (1-0). Russell Croft led the team with three assists. Eight different players scored goals for the Generals. Scott Jackson and Chris TeStrake had three saves apiece.
Virginia Tech's is in 17th place after two rounds of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at the Queen's Harbor Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.
Curtis Deal led the Hokies in scoring with a score of 151, good enough for 44th place overall. Teammate Sean Farrell is tied for 61st place with a score of 155.
Melissa Pickel's homer and Sheree Fletcher's pitching in the first game paced Radford as the Highlanders swept a softball non-conference doubleheader 2-1 and 4-0 over Elon.
Michelle Bower and Susie Roth each had two hits in the second game with pitcher Laura Jewitt getting the shutout.
Josephine Schaeffer took first place in the mile and 2-mile runs for Washington and Lee in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lynchburg.
J.J. Maybury turned the same trick for Roanoke College in the men's competition. Roanoke College finished second in the women's competition. They were led by Sandy Hudson with a win in the 60 Yard High Hurdles with a time of 8.71 seconds and Amy Beck won the shotput with a toss of 35 feet eight inches. Finn Pincus fo Roanoke was voted the Women's Coach of the Year.
Carroll County ousted in regional
Carroll County lost to Gate City in the finals of the Region IV volleyball tournament at Gate City High School.
Gate City took the championship with scores of 15-9, 15-8. Blacksburg made it to the semifinals of but lost to eventual champ Gate City 15-5, 15-6. Both gate City and Carroll County advance to the state tournament.
William Byrd lost in the finals of the Region III regional volleyball tournament to Jefferson Forest 15-9, 15-2.
William Byrd defeated Nelson County in the semifinals 13-15, 15-9, 15-2. Salem lost to Jefferson Forest in the other semifinal 15-7, 15-1. William Byrd and Jefferson Forest advance to the state tournament.
Jeff Stone of Salem finished sixth overall in the Master's Mile portion of the Mobil Indoor Track Meet held at George Mason University with a time of 4:36.
In Dale City, both Trung Nguyen, Timesland's wrestler of the year last year, and Ryan Jones of Franklin County advanced into the semifinals of the Northwest Region Tournament to lead Franklin County into first place on Friday.
The Eagles, with 90 points, lead Stonewall Jackson by 4.5 points, and Hylton (70.5), Pulaski County (62.5), and Woodbridge (61.5) round ou the top five. Other Timesland teams to place included Cave Spring at13, Patrick Henry 17 and William Fleming 19.
J.R. Osbourne also advanced for Pulaski County in the 171 pound weight class.
