Free newsletters

The ``Change of Heart'' newsletters, a series to help people learn how to shop, cook and eat to lower cholesterol levels, are available free from the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office in Roanoke County.

They will be mailed every other week, beginning March 1.

Archaeology field school

The Eighth Annual Summer Field School in Historical Archaeology will be held June 17-July 13 at Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest, Bedford County.

The course offers adults hands-on experience in excavation, data collection and lab procedures.

Class work will be supplemented with weekly lectures by staff and outside specialists. Applications are now being accepted. The non-credit cost for the program is $295. Student housing is available.

History parade

The 1996 African-American History Parade will be held April 20 at 3 p.m. in Salem.

Entries are being accepted for floats, marching bands or groups or other entries that express the theme ``Love and Acceptance for Cultural Heritage.''

Prizes for outstanding entries will range from $100 to $300.

A festival will be held in Longwood Park from 11 a.m-2 p.m. before the parade.
