VMI'S GULLETTE LANDS ON SOUTHERN 1ST TEAM

VMI's Lawrence Gullette was named Monday to the Southern Conference men's basketball first team as selected by a poll of journalists.

Davidson's Brandon Williams was the top vote-getter. Other first-teamers were Anquell McCollum of Western Carolina, Johnny Taylor of Tennessee-Chattanooga and Quinn Harwood of Davidson.

Thirty-six ballots were cast in the voting by members of the Southern Conference Sports Media Association.

Williams, a senior forward, was named on all 36 ballots, receiving 70 points out of a possible 72. He is averaging 18.5 points and six rebounds a game and ranks among the conference's top 10 performers in six categories.

McCollum, a senior guard, received 33 first-team votes and finished with 66 points. He leads the conference in scoring, with 25.2 points per game.

Taylor, a junior forward, collected 52 points from the voters. He ranks fourth in the conference with 17.8 points a game and ranks sixth in rebounding with 7 boards.

Gullette, a senior forward who is sixth in the league in scoring at 15.5 points per game, collected 49 points. Harwood, a senior forward who is 10th in the conference in scoring at 14.4 points per game, compiled 48 points.

Marshall placed two players, junior guard Keith Veney and freshman guard Jason Williams, on the conference's second team. They were joined by sophomore forward Kareem Livingston of Appalachian State, senior guard Chris Alpert of Davidson and sophomore forward Chuck Vincent of Furman.

CAVS PACE ACC WOMEN: Wendy Palmer and Tora Suber of Virginia, along with Tracy Reid of North Carolina, lead the voting for the All-Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball team announced by The Associated Press.

Palmer, a 6-foot-2 senior, captured 124 out of a possible 134 points to lead the voting for the first team. She finished with 127 points overall. Reid, a 5-11 sophomore, was second with 110 first-team votes and 116 points. Suber was third with 88 first-team selections and 106 points.

Completing the first team were Wake Forest's Tracy Connor and Clemson's Stephanie Ridgeway.

Named to the second team were Tyish Hall of Duke; Chasity Melvin of North Carolina State; Kisha Ford of Georgia Tech; Ali Day of Duke; and Jennifer Howard of North Carolina State.
