Blue Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America earned a good citizenship award from Winn-Dixie Inc. for service to the community.|

The award, which includes a certificate and a cash donation, was established 12 years ago in an effort to recognize the efforts of those who serve young people in the community. Thirty-seven groups in North Carolina and Virginia accepted awards this year. The cash awards totaled more than $85,000.

The Roanoke Valley SPCA'S "Claws & Paws" program received more than 10,000 pounds of pet food, treats, kitty litter and maintenance supplies and $1,300 cash from Kroger shoppers between Thanksgiving through Christmas.

During the past three years the SPCA program has received more than $4,000, in addition to thousands of pounds of food and supplies under the program with nine Kroger stores.
