LENTEN SERVICES

Awakening, a series of spiritual growth services sponsored for the past 14 years by Roanoke area Churches of the Brethren, will feature sermons by the Rev. Dr. Nancy Faus this year.

Faus, a campus minister and professor of ministry studies at Bethany Theological Seminary in Indiana, will preach at Central Church of the Brethren in downtown Roanoke March 24-27, nightly at 7:15. "The Psalms in Jesus' Life and Ours" will be her theme.

Faus, who was chairwoman of a committee that revised the hymnal used by Church of the Brethren and Mennonite denominations, will lead Bible studies on the theme Monday through Wednesday mornings at 10 at Green Hill Church in Salem, Red Hill Church in Clearbrook and at Williamson Road Church, respectively

Offerings at the services will go to the West End Center in Roanoke.

Joint Lenten Enrichment Services, sponsored by four Roanoke Valley Lutheran parishes, are in progress Wednesday nights at 7:30. The remaining programs will be Wednesday at Glade Creek Church, 208 Webster Road, Blue Ridge; March 13 at St. Timothy Church, 1201 Hardy Road, Vinton; March 20 at Trinity Church, 4040 Williamson Road; and March 27 at St. Philip Church, 8115 Williamson Road, Hollins. Colonial Avenue Baptist Church, Colonial at Virginia 419, will serve Lenten luncheons beginning March 13. The $2.50 meal will be served from 12:30 to 1 p.m. with 20-minute meditations afterward. The speakers will be the Rev. David Delaney on March 13; the Rev. Arthur Grant on March 20; the Rev. Bill Logan on March 27; and the Rev. Robert Cummins on April 3.

REVIVALS

Brookhill Baptist Church, 4225 Bandy Road S.E., has scheduled revival services March 10-13 with Harold Vaughan as evangelist. The guest preacher has ministered in more than 40 states and two foreign countries. He will speak at the 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday services and weeknights at 7. A nursery will be open.

MUSICAL EVENTS

The Williamsburg Ringers, handbell students from the College of William and Mary, will present a concert March 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Westhampton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 2515 Grandin Road S.W.

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 3000 Pitzer Road S.E., has scheduled a program by The Churchmen, a gospel bluegrass quartet, for Sunday at 6:30 p.m. An offering will be taken.

CHURCH PEOPLE

Jeff Hummel, organist and choir director at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in downtown Roanoke for the past eight years, will be honored there Sunday with a farewell reception from 3-5 p.m. The event is sponsored by Disciples congregations in the Roanoke Valley and Alleghany Highlands in recognition of Hummel's regional music leadership. He is moving to Richmond because of a business transfer.

The Rev. Collier Harvey of Salem has joined the staff of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church as part-time parish associate. Harvey, a former minister of Salem Presbyterian Church and the executive of the old Fincastle Presbytery, will work especially with visiting the sick and training of laity. He and his wife, Betsy, moved to Salem in 1972, and he retired from full-time ministry two years ago.

Salem Church of Christ, in downtown Salem, has chosen Brian K. Orahoodas its next senior minister. Now minister of Stafford County Christian Church near Fredericksburg, Orahood is a 1985 graduate of Cincinnati Bible College. From 1986 to 1988, he was youth minister at Edgewood Christian Church. He is married to the former Jana Vaughan and has two daughters.

Jim Herron, the former senior pastor, remains on the staff as minister of family life. Orahood will begin his work by June 1.
