LENTEN SERVICES
Awakening, a series of spiritual growth services sponsored for the past 14 years by Roanoke area Churches of the Brethren, will feature sermons by the Rev. Dr. Nancy Faus this year.
Faus, a campus minister and professor of ministry studies at Bethany Theological Seminary in Indiana, will preach at Central Church of the Brethren in downtown Roanoke March 24-27, nightly at 7:15. "The Psalms in Jesus' Life and Ours" will be her theme.
Faus, who was chairwoman of a committee that revised the hymnal used by Church of the Brethren and Mennonite denominations, will lead Bible studies on the theme Monday through Wednesday mornings at 10 at Green Hill Church in Salem, Red Hill Church in Clearbrook and at Williamson Road Church, respectively
Offerings at the services will go to the West End Center in Roanoke.
Joint Lenten Enrichment Services, sponsored by four Roanoke Valley Lutheran parishes, are in progress Wednesday nights at 7:30. The remaining programs will be Wednesday at Glade Creek Church, 208 Webster Road, Blue Ridge; March 13 at St. Timothy Church, 1201 Hardy Road, Vinton; March 20 at Trinity Church, 4040 Williamson Road; and March 27 at St. Philip Church, 8115 Williamson Road, Hollins. Journeying With Jesus, a Lenten study with sessions at 10:15 a.m. and 7 p.m., is in progress at First United Methodist Church in downtown Salem. The Rev. Al Thorne will lead the morning session, and the Rev. Tom Joyce will lead the evening service. Call 389-6046 for more information.
College Lutheran Church, 210 S. College Ave. in Salem, is sponsoring community Lenten services Wednesday nights at 7 through March 27. Their theme is "They Killed him by hanging him on a tree but God raised him from the dead."
Ed Kilbourne, a Christian folksinger and recording artist who has performed in more than 6,000 programs in the Southeast, will be at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Salem Monday at 6:30 p.m. His presentation, one of several Lenten events, will follow a potluck meal in the parish hall.
MUSICAL EVENTS
The Milligan College Concert Choir of Johnson City, Tenn. will perform March 8 at 7 p.m. at Edgewood Christian Church, 1006 Peck St. N.W. The 35-member choir will present sacred music from many periods. An offering will be taken.
Paige Keene, a gospel music artist from Richlands, will perform March 8 at 6:30 p.m. at The Praise Cafe in the Sheraton Inn, 2727 Ferndale Drive N.W. The cafe is a smoke- and alcohol-free youth lounge with cover charge of $3 for those not buying a buffet dinner. Spirit FM Christian radio promotes the program. Call 774-9798 for information.
CHURCH PEOPLE
Jeff Hummel, organist and choir director at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in downtown Roanoke for the past eight years, will be honored there Sunday with a farewell reception from 3-5 p.m. The event is sponsored by Disciples congregations in the Roanoke Valley and Alleghany Highlands in recognition of Hummel's regional music leadership. He is moving to Richmond because of a business transfer.
The Rev. R. Stuart Carlton, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Salem, and Paul B. Welleford, minister of music at Salem Baptist Church, are in Aquadulce, Panama, through March 14 as part of a team of evangelists working with youth and in radio preaching.
OUTREACH
The Roanoke Area Ministries staff is seeking church volunteers to help renovate its day shelter kitchen which serves lunch to the homeless. Painters, floor sanders and carpenters for light repairs are especially needed. Call Judy Diehl, 345-9786, for more information.
SPECIAL SERVICES
A Full Gospel Conference, sponsored by the Spirit of Life Full Gospel Baptist Church, is scheduled Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sheraton Airport Inn. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. David C. Forbes Jr., pastor of Columbus Christian Center in Ohio. Cost is $5.
The Roanoke congregation also will provide a bus to Richmond for the denomination's state conference May 15-17. Call 343-9048 or 362-5516 to make reservations for the $95 trip.
Church Women United, an ecumenical and interracial Christian service organization, will sponsor its 109th annual World Day of Prayer service Friday at Loudon Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 730 Loudon Ave. N.W. The 10:30 a.m. service will follow a format developed by women in Haiti during the time of civil unrest.
