IN SCHOOL

ROANOKE CITY SCHOOLS have announced the winners of the 1995-96 PTA Reflections contest, which encourages creative expression in literature, music, photography and visual arts. This year's theme is "Just Open Your Eyes and See ..." The first-place winner in each category will advance to district competition. The winners, by grade level are as follows:

Preschool through second grade for literature - Aaron Fallon of Fishburn Park, first place; Elizabeth McLaughlin of Fishburn Park, second; and Beth Levy of Crystal Spring, third.

THE WILLIAM BYRD HIGH SCHOOL FORENSICS TEAM won first place in the recent Blue Ridge District Forensics Tournament. First-, second- and third-place winners will compete at the regional tournament on March 9. Janet McKay coaches the team.

Individual winners are: Melissa Meador, first in prose interpretation; Miguel Castro, first, humorous dramatic interpretation; Joan Hodge and Amy Stephenson, first, duo interpretation; Omeed Dariani, second, oratory; Michael Graeser, third, prose interpretation; Tiffany Sandifer, third, serious dramatic interpretation; Kearston Rorrer, third, poetry interpretation; Jay Smith, third, humorous dramatic interpretation; Chris Sloan, third, extemporaneous speaking, domestic; Natasha Johnson, third, oratory; Michael Fisher, fourth, storytelling; Katie Laughlin, fourth, spelling; Gus Morris, fourth, extemporaneous speaking, foreign; Amy Young, fifth, storytelling; Laura Franklin, fifth, serious dramatic interpretation; Chris Fazler, sixth, poetry interpretation; and Tamara Ayers and Shane Jenkins, sixth, duo interpretation.

JUDITH PAINTER, a social studies teacher at William Fleming High School, will be one of 15 Virginia educators at the 1996 Virginia Links: Middle East Seminar in Syria. The program gives educators an opportunity to explore the physical and cultural geography of Syria.

PRINCESS D. KEMP, a Cave Spring High school student, won a $100 U.S. Savings Bond and advanced to the state competition in the Servistar and Coast to Coast All-American Vocational Student Awards program.

REP. BOB GOODLATTE, R-Roanoke, recently announced the 1996 service academy nominees from the Sixth Congressional District. The students will compete for appointments to one of the service academies. The nominees are:

Gordon Lawson, son of Lewis and Rita Bishop of Roanoke and a student at Patrick Henry High School, has been nominated to the Naval Academy.

Christopher Bradley, son of Tom and Patricia Bradley and a graduate of Northside High School, has been nominated to the Naval Academy.

Michael Gates, son of Marshall and Sandy Gates of Troutville and a student at Lord Botetourt High School, has been nominated to the U.S. Military Academy.

Philip Buchy, son of Philip and Mary Buchy and a student at the U.S. Air Force Prep School, has been nominated to the Air Force Academy.

Garrett Lancaster, son of Garrett and Debbie Lancaster of Roanoke and a student at William Fleming High School, has been nominated to the Merchant Marine Academy.

Timothy Campbell, son of Mason and Peggy Campbell of Roanoke and a student at Northside High School, has been nominated to the Air Force Academy and the U.S. Military Academy.

LOUISE TEMPLE FORSYTH, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Logan Forsyth of Roanoke, recently won the second-highest-level art award in the 1996 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Forsyth, a senior at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, won a Silver Key for her oil pastel "Montagna."
