Left-hander Brian Fitzgerald pitched a complete game as Virginia Tech opened its baseball season Wednesday with a 14-0 victory over Virginia Commonwealth at The Diamond in Richmond. Fitzgerald (1-0) gave up five hits, including two bunt singles, and struck out 10.
Tech opened the scoring with a solo home run by Kevin Barker in the fourth inning. Senior catcher Josh Herman (William Byrd High School) hit a three-run double as the Hokies broke open the game with a five-run fifth inning.
Tech finished with 17 hits. Barker went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI and Herman was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles. Freshmen Matt Griswold and Eric Shiflett each went 3-for-5.
Shane Pierce (2-3) took the loss for VCU (4-7).

* Ninth-ranked Washington and Lee scored all six goals in the fourth quarter as the Generals defeated No.22 Lynchburg 11-5 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game in Lynchburg.
Ande Jenkins scored four goals and Russell Croft added three goals and one assist for W&L (2-0 overall, 2-0 conference). Doug Dicconson had two goals and Jason Haslbeck contributed one goal and three assists for the Hornets (0-1, 0-1).
