Golden West Foods in Bedford has named ROBERT W.L. HANSEN vice president of finance. He joined the company in 1993 as controller and is responsible for several functions, including the accounting and management information systems and the purchasing departments.
STEVEN L. MOORE has been appointed vice president of technical services and industrial business development. Moore joined Golden West in 1989 as director of research and development.
Golden West Foods is a supplier of specialty frozen food products, primarily to the food service industry.

GARY L. HARRIS has joined System4 Advertising Agency in Roanoke as vice president and controller. Harris formerly worked for Media General and its Richmond Newspapers unit.
COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
LINDA SHORT HODGES of Vinton has been named director of research at National Business College in Roanoke. She will oversee quality management, regulatory compliance and efforts to maximize customer satisfaction. She previously was director of community planning at the Council of Community Services in Roanoke. Also at NBC, ROGER DALTON has been appointed director of marketing and community affairs. He will be responsible for public relations for the college's eight campuses in Virginia. Dalton formerly was executive director of the Williamson Road Area Business Association and executive director of the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.
GLENN O. THORNILL JR. of Roanoke has been named to the board of trustees at Washington and Lee University. Thornhill is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Maid Bess Corp., a Salem-based apparel manufacturing company.
COMMUNICATIONS
KAREN W. MEREDITH has been promoted from sales coordinator to communications consultant at Telstar Long Distance in Roanoke. Telstar is a reseller of long-distance communications based in Evansville, Ill. MELISSA HODGES has been hired as a sales coordinator for the company. She previously was the assistant manager at Nature's Outlet in Salem.
ENVIRONMENT
EDWARD OLIVER, formerly of Haz-Com, has joined Environmental Options Inc. in Rocky Mount as compliance manager. He will be responsible for coordinating and providing training courses under federal and state regulatory guidelines and will also provide safety and hazardous waste compliance inspections and consultations.
FIBER OPTICS
Optical Cable Corp. of Roanoke has announced the retirement of M.T. "CHUCK" SURAT, vice president of sales for the company's northeastern region. ROBERT BOOZE, regional sales manager for the northeastern region, will assume his responsibilities. Booze has been with the company for five years. A.G. MELSON JR., who has been with Optical Cable for four years, will be sales manager for the North Carolina and Virginia territories. He previously was in sales in the computer industry.

MICHAEL ANDERSON "ANDY" WILLIAMS has been appointed investment vice president at J.C. Bradford & Co. He joined the Roanoke investment firm in 1993. He is the former owner of Gallery 3, an art gallery on the Roanoke City Market.
INSURANCE
ROBERT P. MARTIN SR. has joined Scott Insurance as an account manager in its Roanoke office. He comes to the Lynchburg-based insurance firm with 10 years of commercial lending experience in banking.
MARIAN A. JANNEY has joined Wills & Damiano of Nationwide Insurance in Salem as an associate agent. She has 41 years experience in the insurance industry.
JOHN WHITTLE of Thor Inc. and DAVID ARGABRIGHT of Argabright Contractors have been elected to the board of directors for the Virginia Contractors Group Self-Insurance Association.
MANUFACTURING
Furniture manufacturer American of Martinsville has promoted GUY P. STANLEY to vice president human resources and JAMES W. ANDERSON to vice president controller. Stanley, who joined the company in 1994, most recently was director of human resources. Anderson, who previously was company controller, has been with the company for 28 years. American of Martinsville, a subsidiary of Ladd Furniture Inc., based in High Point, N.C., makes furniture for hotels, motels and other facilities.
E. LINWOOD WRIGHT of Danville has been appointed chairman of the board for the A.L. Philpott Manufacturing Center in Martinsville. The center serves manufacturers in 23 counties and 10 cities in Virginia, providing technological assistance, material and product engineering, quality improvement, environmental assessments and practices and work-force development.
MEDIA
AL RITTER has been named executive vice president and chief financial officer of Landmark Communications Inc., Norfolk-based parent of The Roanoke Times. Ritter formerly was executive vice president and chief financial officer of TeleCable, a cable multiple system operator that merged last year with TeleCommunications Inc. Before joining TeleCable in 1984, Ritter was vice president/finance for Landmark.
