BURNETTE, Lorine Hooker, 75, of Hillsville, passed away Monday, March 4, 1996 in Blue Ridge Highlands Nursing home, Galax. She was born July 10, 1920 in Grayson County, daughter of the late James William and Ola Willi ams Hooker. Mrs. Burnette was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Burnette. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James D. and Linda Burnette, Fancy Gap; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Monty Leonard, Thomasville, N.C.; sister, Vera Mabel Cantler, Austinville; brother, Leon Hooker, Fairfax; grandchildren, Tammy Beck, Timothy Leonard, James D. CARY, Thelbert (``Pete""), 74, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Saturday, March 2, 1996 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla.. He was a native of Roanoke and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a pipefitter for the Newpo rt News/ Holchase Cellnese Co. in Pearisburg, Va. He and his late wife helped found the Faith Temple in Pearisburg as well as many other countries. He was also served as Deacon at Faith Temple. He is survived by his sister, Hazel Rushton, Fernandian Beach; sister-in-law, Ailene Cary, Benton; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, 1996 at Bosque-Bello Cemetery with The Rev. David Lawson officiating. FREEMAN, William Thomas Sr., 64, of Gibsonville , N.C., died Saturday, March 2, 1996. He was a truck driver for Harris Teeter Transportation. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Freeman Jr. Surviving are his wife, Alfreda Rose Rhoton Freeman; three sons and daughters-in-law, William Thomas Jr. (Billy) and Pam Freeman, Virginia Beach, Ricky M. GRIFFIN, Leslie, 65, of Vinton, died Sunday, March 3, 1996. He was a member of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church and a member and former president of Crossroads Lions Club. He was also an Eye Bank donor. He served in Germany with the activated Texas National Guard 95th Medical Group during the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of John A. Wilkerson High School, Belhaven N.C., and attended Wake Forest University. He opened the Roanoke branch of the Ford Motor Credit Corporation in 1962, and retired with 30 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Annie M. Maxey Griffin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory Louis and Evelyn Griffin, and Leslie Glenn and Candy Griffin of Roanoke; a daughter and son-in-law, Trina Dare and Douglas John Graham of Salem; three grandsons, Adam Louis Griffin, Hunter John Graham and Casey Griffin Graham; three sisters, Marie Ingalls of Belhaven, N.C., Elsie Respess of Richmond and Angela Grady of Williamston, N.C., and many beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Thrasher Chapel of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 1996, with the Rev. Wm. Anthony Layman and the Rev. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Carolyn and James Troutt, Karen and Steve Reed; two sons, Gary Dean Thompson, Keith Alan Hawley; one granddaughter, Stephanie Nicole Reed; one brother, Daniel Sutphin; and her stepmother, Eva Sutphin, all of Christiansburg. HOPKINS, Byrd Willis, 78, of Botetourt County, died Sunday, March 3, 1996 in the Virginia Veterans Care Center, Salem. He was born in Salem on December 18, 1917, the son of Garland James and Maude Logan Hopkins. He was a graduate of the Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Va. and Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., majoring in Pomology. During World War II he was a captain and pilot in the Army Artillery receiving the Purple Heart. Before his retirement, he was an apple grower at Garland Orchards, and was the developer of Williamsburg Court, both at Daleville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriot Rutherfoord Hopkins, and his younger brother, Garland James Hopkins, Jr. Surviving are two daughters, Helen Carter Hopkins Greffard, Lac-Megantic, Quebec, Canada, Harriot DuVal Hopkins, Arlington; two sons, Lewis Willis Hopkins, Alexandria, William Rosborough Hopkins, Daleville; two granddaughters, Melanie Catherine Greffard, Marie-Helene Greffard; one sister, Nancy Washington Hopkins, Roanoke; one brother, Fortescue Whittle Hopkins, New Castle. Funeral services will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Fincastle, Wednesday, March 6, 1996 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jim Workman officiating. Interment will follow in East Hill Cemetery, Salem. LEAMNSON, Jack, 69, of 5643 Locust Drive, Dublin, died Monday, March 4, 1996 in University Hospital, Charlottesville. Born June 30, 1926, in Tell City, Ind., he was the son of the late Jack Leamnson and Louise Ress. Mr. Leamnson had retired as minister for the christian church after 30 years. He was a graduate of the Johnson Bible College, Knoxville, Tenn. and attended Butler University, Indianapolis, Ind. for 2 years. He had also retired from AT&T Corporation in Fairlawn. He is survived by his wife, Esther Robinson Leamnson, Dublin; one daughter, Mrs. Walter (``Dian'') Phipps, Dublin; one son, Michael Leamnson, Roanoke; one brother, George Leamnson, Rockville, Ind.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m. from the Community Christian Church, Newbern, with Dr. David Eubank, Matthew Showalter and Mike Whitaker officiating. Entombment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Dublin. Visiting will be Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home, Pulaski. LONG, Mila E., 80, of Radford, died Saturday, March 2, 1996 in a Radford hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Long. Born in Giles Co. in 1915, she served in the US Navy as a Lt. Commander and had a long career as a Registered Nurse retiring from St. Albans Hospital in Radford. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Long Hovey; a son, Richard Long; a granddaughter, Amber Long; four sisters-in-law, Louise Long and Eunice Long both of Radford, Omega Long, Blacksburg, Irma Barton, Dayton, Ohio. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 1996 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford. MAXEY, Richard Cook, 68, of Rt. #2, Rural Retreat, died Sunday, March 3, 1996 in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Richmond. He was born in Pageton, W.Va., the son of the late John Homer and Carrie Lee Pickle Maxey. Mr. Maxey was a retired carpenter, a member of the Rural Retreat Presbyterian Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the Rural Retreat American Legion Post #229, and a member of the Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge #226 A.F. & A.M. He is survived by his wife, Joan Catron Maxey; one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Maxey and Dennis Houseman of Rt. #4, Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, David R. and Diana Maxey, Rodney J. and Brenda Maxey, all of Rural Retreat; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Ethel and Neal Burkett of Groseclose, Lola and Jim Smith of Glade Spring, Joanne and Edward Wright of Rural Retreat; two brothers, Frank Maxey of Rural Retreat, John Maxey of Groseclose; four grandchildren, Maranda Maxey, Brian Houseman, Craig Alan Maxey, and Brittany Maxey. TROBAUGH, Elizabeth Leone Bayless, 90, of Waynesboro, died Sunday afternoon, March 3, 1996 in Avante of Waynesboro. Mrs. Trobaugh was born July 21, 1905 in Johnson City, Tenn., the youngest daughter of James McBurney Bayless and Elizabeth Loretta Treadway Bayless. She was the last surviving member of her family of three brothers and four sisters. She married Thomas H.. Trobaugh of Waynesboro in 1960. Mr. Trobaugh died in 1977. She was also preceded in death by a special niece on March 1, 1996, Dorothy Boukenight of Johnson City, Tenn. Mrs. Trobaugh had lived at 1917 Oxford Ave., S.W. in Roanoke for many years and had many friends in the Roanoke area. She was a charter member of Grace Church in Roanoke. She was a retired Federal Government employee and worked as a secretary in the Fiscal Service Dept. at the Salem Veterans Hospital in Salem. She was a member of NARFE and AARP. She had made her home with her niece and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Harold D. Bosserman of Route 1, Box 372, Waynesboro, since August of 1992. In addition to Mr. and Mrs. Harold D. Bosserman, she is also survived by their daughters, Vrla B. Leach and Loretta Elizabeth Knott of Staunton; a stepson, Donald Trobaugh and his family of Greensboro, N.C.; great nieces, Frances Mawyer of Fishersville, and Marilyn Harner and Connie Kestner of Waynesboro; nephew, the Rev. H. Abe Moyer and his wife, Winifred, of Charlotte, N.C., and their children, Pamela M. Flynn, Michael Moyer, both of Charlotte, N.C., and his son, David L. Moyer of Newport News; nephew, William Warren Moyer of Ormond Beach, Fla., and his son, George D. Moyer of Margate, Fla., and daughter, Ina Jane Wade of Fieldale. Also surviving are nephews, Richard and David Boukenight of Johnson City, Tenn.; and other relatives. A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Waynesboro Chapel of Etter-Reynolds Funeral Service by the Rev. H. Abe Moyer. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery in Waynesboro. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Elizabeth and Harold Bosserman.
TRUMAN, Stephen Vernon, 88, of Hardy, died Monday, March 4, 1996. WILLIAMS, Brantley P., 96, of Rocky Mount, and formerly of Fort Blackmore, died Monday, March 4, 1996 in Franklin Health Care Center, Rocky Mount. Mr. Williams was born September 4, 1899 in Powcan, King and Queen County. In 1922 he moved to Fort Blackmore, where he permanently made his home for 43 years. The last 13 years he had resided with his daughter and son-in-law in Rocky Mount. A son of the late Eugene and Sue Powers Williams, his wife, Nannie C. Williams preceded him in death in April 1983. He was also preceded in death by his son, Charles E. Williams of Kingsport, Tenn. He was a teacher and principal in the public school system in Lee, Wise and Scott counties for 43 years. He taught and was principal at Fort Blackmore Elementary School until he retired. Mr. Williams was educated in the public schools of King and Queen County and graduated from Lynchburg College in 1922. He was of the Methodist faith, was a veteran of World War I, and a member of American Legion Post 6, Rocky Mount. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy W. and Charles D. Santrock, Rocky Mount; a daughter-in-law, Clara B. Williams, Kingsport, Tenn; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruby Williams, Glen Allen. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, M arch 7, 1996, from the Gate City Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Holston View Cemetery, Weber City. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at Gate City Funeral Home. Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount, is in charge of local arrangements.
