TECH PITCHER DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

Tina Diamond fired a two-hit shutout as the Hokies ran past Cornell 4-0 in the second game of a softball doubleheader Monday in Blacksburg. The Hokies, playing their inaugural season, lost the first game 3-1.

Diamond pitched seven innings and walked four while striking out 11 for her second win of the season.

The Hokies (3-10) scored two runs in the fourth inning when Melissa Sanderson doubled home Christine Trunnell and then scored on Katie Mills' fielder's choice for all the runs the Hokies would need.

In the first game, the Hokies lost despite a solid pitching performance from Jennie Kallio, who went the distance, giving up two earned runs on eight hits and walking just one.

BASEBALL Ferrum sweeps Ramapo

Ferrum blasted 29 hits for 24 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep over Ramapo 12-2 and 12-2 in a college baseball game in Ferrum.

The Panthers (10-3-1) got two RBI each from Luther Headley, Riley Hodges, Chuck Jarrett and Brian Goodrich to help Jermaine Fletcher (1-0) win the first game

In the second game, Headley drove in four runs as Marty Ploetner (3-1) got the win. Ramapo is 0-2.

* Louie Napoleon and David Dixon drove in two runs each as VMI won the second game of doubleheader 7-6 over Youngstown State in Lexington. VMI lost the first game 12-7.

VMI (5-15) scored four runs in the fourth inning of the nightcap to help give Danny Hughes (3-4) the win.

In the opener, the Penguins (2-1) got seven RBI from Jason Triveri, including a grand slam, and overcame the Keydets' Franco Martin, who drove in five runs.

Hollins falls in lacrosse 13-12

Deanna Estes scored five goals to help Shenandoah (3-1) outlast Hollins 13-12 in a women's lacrosse game in Winchester. Hollins (1-4) was led by Jen Widmer, who scored four goals.

* The Virginia Tech women's soccer team announced five freshman signings for the 1996-97 season.

Three of the five are in-state players: Tatum Crawford, Fairfax; Jennifer Pollich, West Springfield; and Shannon Otto, Midlothian. The other two players are from Allenwood, N.J.: Tracy Powers, and Aimee Stonack.

* Ben Nielson, riding for team Xaloy, finished first in the category 4 race at the Shamrock Criterium Bicycle Race held in Virginia Beach on Sunday.

Wesley Wilmer finished third in the category 3 race with Brian Marshall and Drew Thomas each finishing sixth. All three also ride for team Xaloy.

* Lissa Wood has become the fourth swimmer from the Carter Center in Roanoke to qualify for the Junior Nationals starting today in Nashville, Tenn.

Wood, 17, a senior at Cave Spring High School, qualified in the 100-yard girls' butterfly with a time of 58.56 seconds.

Carter Center swimmers who had qualified earlier in the year were Mandy Lippitt, a sophomore at Cave Spring; Trent Johnson, a sophomore at North Cross; and Steve Cromer, a junior at Salem High School.

* The Peoria Rivermen, who have been a member of the International Hockey League for 14 seasons, will drop down to the East Coast Hockey League starting next season. The team will join the ECHL's North Division.
