BRIAN SUTTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Sutton of Vinton, recently won first place in the Veterans of Foreign Wars "Voice of Democracy" essay contest. Sutton is a junior at William Byrd High School, and his entry, "Answering America's Call," was sponsored by Vinton VFW Post No.4522.
THE GENERAL JAMES BRECKENRIDGE CHAPTER, Daughters of the American Revolution, has announced the winners of its 1995-96 Good Citizen Award. The award, given to high school seniors, is based on dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
The winners are: Leroy Norman Lark, son of Barbara Sanders, Lord Botetourt; Jennifer Rebecca Vermillion, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert L. Vermillion, North Cross School; Nathan Kyle Musselman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Musselman, Patrick Henry; and Suzette Leigh Leonard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Leonard, Roanoke Valley Christian Schools.
KELLY ROSENBERGER, a senior at Patrick Henry High School, recently made the viola section of the All-State Orchestra after an audition at James Madison University. Rosenberger, daughter of Russell and Eula Rosenberger, also is a member of the Roanoke Youth Symphony.
TAMMI WOODEN, daughter of P.E. and Sharron Wooden, recently received a $400 scholarship from the Roanoke-based Theta chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary sorority for women educators. Wooden, an honor graduate of William Fleming High School, attends Virginia Tech, where she is majoring in Spanish and elementary education.
ROANOKE CITY SCHOOLS announced that six Roanoke middle school teachers were among 20 educators selected to participate in Blue Ridge Public Television's PBS Mathline. The teachers are: Barbara Smith and Bonnie Simmons from Ruffner; Blair Buehler and Tom Cushing from Addison; and Terry Bigler and Eva Jirout from Madison.
The project allows teachers to interact with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics through on-line discussion.
LATASHA JUANEL SUGGS, a senior at William Fleming High School, is a semifinalist in the National Beta Club Scholarship Program. She placed in the top 273 of the 783 students competing. Suggs is one of 12 Virginia students to get the honor and is eligible to become a finalist.
