BATES, Robert Vergil, 70, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday, March 19, 1996 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was retired from Hercules and also Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. Surviving are his wife, Donna B. Bates; one son, Mark; a daughter, Laura; and two grandchildren, Megan and Nicole. A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday from the Good Shepherd Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. George Bulson. Friends and neighbors are welcome. DAVIS, Billy Russell , 78 of Marion, died Wednesday, March 20, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a member and former deacon of the Marion Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater, a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667 and the Marion Odd Fellow Lodge. He was retired from the James River Correctional Center as a Physician Assistant. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Elledge Davis of Marion; one daughter, Lisa Davis Fines and special friend, Ricky Long, both of Leonardtown, Maryland; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gene C. Davis, Lt. Col. Retired US Army and Carol of Burke, Philip G. & Becky Davis of Christiansburg; two grandchildren, Lt. Timothy C. Davis of Fort Knox, Ky. and Heather L. Davis of Burke; one sister-in-law, Madeline C. Davis of Marion; and several nieces and nephews. Davis, James Russell, 73, of Route 6, Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, March 20, 1996 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ola Davis, 2 infant brothers, and brothers, Mark and Lloyd Davis and one sister, Virginia Turner. Mr. Davis was retired from the United States Marines and was a life member and Adjutant of the V. F. W. Post #5862. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Dane and Claudia Davis, San Bernadino, Calif.; three grandchildren, Becky, Paul and Rachel Davis, all of Calif.; three sisters, Eula Ayers, Shelby Holley and Reva Spicer, all of Rocky Mount; two devoted caregivers, Nicki Radford and Kevin Spicer. EVANS, Betty Lue Rogers, 62, of Roanoke, died Thursday, March 21, 1996, after a lengthy illness. Surviving are her husband, James B. Evans; a son, James B. Evans Jr.; three daughters, Jennifer D. HUTCHISON, Ralph Peck, 74, of Newport, died Thursday, March 21, 1996 in Radford Community Hospital. Born in Newport, he was a son of the late Martin Payne and Lizzie Givens Hutchinson. Ralph was a member of the First Christian Church of Newport, a retired employee of Hoechst-Celanese, with 35 years experience, and a veteran of the U. S. Navy, WWII. Surviving are his wife, Hazel Wagner Hutchison; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Cathy Hutchison, U. S. Navy in Hawaii, Patrick and Viki Hutchison of Newport; three grandsons, Todd Hutchison of Durham, N.C., Stacy Hutchison of Bridgewater and Chris Hutchison of Newport; one sister, Ruth Reynolds of New Castle. A memorial service will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the First Christian Church of Newport. At Ralph's request, his remains will be cremated. The family will receive friends at the Kendall funeral Home in Pembroke, Saturday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association.

OVERSTREET, Willie Dewey, (``Bocus""), 6 0, of Moneta, passed away Thursday, March 21, 1996 in the Roanoke Memorial Rehabilitation Center. He was born December 22, 1935 in Bedford County, a son of the late Sam Overstreet and Annie Bell Hubbard Overstreet, of Moneta, who survives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Will (Jack) Overstreet. He was a retired employee of Cliff Byrd & Sons and was a member of the Emmaus United Methodist Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by four brothers, Stewart Overstreet, Moneta, Sam Overstreet, Bedford, Ernest Overstreet, John Overstreet, both of Roanoke; eight sisters, Jean Overstreet, Roanoke, Alice Overstreet, Mary Cumby, both of Moneta, Mavis Moody, Robinsville, N.C., Bessie Fulk, King, N.C., Annie Mae Creasy, Shirley Hamilton, both of Bedford, Peggy Scott, Goodview; a number of nieces & nephews. POINDEXTER, Vera Ruth Cornelious 52, of Roanoke, departed this life on March 19, 1996 in the home of her parents in Chicago, Ill. following a long and valiantly fought battle with cancer. Vera, a native of McCrory, Ark., received her early education in McCroy Public Schools. She received her BS Degree from AM&N College (now known as University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff). She received her Master's Degree from VPI, Blacksburg, Va. Vera spent her professional career as an employee of the Roanoke City Public Schools System. She taught in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades at Harrison Melrose, Northwest and Fallon Park Elementary Schools. She was devoted to the many children she taught. She was a member of the UTP working many years as REA representative, delegate to VEA convention, and attended one NEA convention. She united with Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church after moving to Roanoke. She served as an elder, clerk of session, and willingly worked where she was needed in the local church. She also served as permanent clerk, Presbytery of SO Virginia, and was a member of the Transitional Steering Committee for the merger of Presbyteries PCUS and United Presbyterian Church in Southwest Va. Saddened by their loss but rejoicing in her memory, are her beloved husband, Carnis; sons, Carnis Ferdinand and Clifton Degrant, all of Roanoke; parents, Clifton and Wilmener Cornelious, Chicago, Ill.; mother-in-law, Lillian Reese, Roanoke; sister, Betty Murphy; twelve brothers, William D. RIDDL E, Erwin William, 39, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, March 20, 1996, in the VA Medical Center, Salem. He was born at Stadeln, Germany on February 27, 1957 and was the son of Mrs. Anna Winkler Riddle of Blacksburg and the late Thomas Edward Riddle. He served in the Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. He was employed as a telemarketer in the Pharmacutical Industry. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two brothers and their wives, Larie and Linda Riddle of Austinville, Rodney T. and Lise Riddle of Radford; his god parents, Erwin and Ursula Winkler of Germany; his Uncle Helmut of Germany; two uncles, Bill and Toby Riddle of Narrows; his aunt, Euna Ratliff of Pearisburg; six nieces; two nephews; two special friends, Bobby McDaniel and Dean Downs; and many special friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Cedar Grove Church of Christ with the Rev. Vince Guerra and Pastor Kellis Meclaugherty officiating. Burial will follow in The Angel's Rest Cemetery, Narrows with graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post #68 of Narrows. ROBERTSON, Hortense Fuller, 73, of Pembroke, died Wednesday evening, March 20, 1996 at her home following a long illness. Born in Loudoun Co., Va. she was a daughter of the late Beverly Walton and Bessie Fuller White. Hortense was a member of Castle Rock Baptist Church in Pembroke and retired from RAAP Hercules Powder Co., and was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Robertson and a brother, Junior White. Surviving are her husband Thomas E. Robertson; two sons Tommy Robertson of Richmond and Kyle Robertson of Pembroke; two daughters, Brenda Moser and Drema Moser of Pembroke; one brother Lee White of Pembroke; two sisters Margaret Sharp and Bertie Kitts of Pembroke; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke with the Rev. Wayne Sellers and the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home Friday evening from six until nine p.m.

SMITH, Blanche Austin, of Salem, passed away, Wednesday, March 20, 1996. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church, Philathea Class, and B.A.A.L. Group. She was a 50+ yr. member of the Salem Womens Club, a 50+ yr. member of Electa Chapter #33 Order of the Eastern Star. She was born in Rural Home, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Uri D. Smith. For approximately 50 yrs. Mr. and Mrs. Smith operated U.D. Smith Lumber Company, west of Salem, near Dixie Caverns. She is survived by two sisters, Katye A. Atkins, Logan, W.Va., and Rose Wintergreen, Pittsburgh, Penn.; brother, June E. Austin, Oakdale Penn.; also a number of nieces and nephews, including, Doris and Steve Vranch, Logan, W.Va. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 1996 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem, with Rev. Lew Bennett officiating. SOWDER, Dr. William J., 82, of Farmville, died at his home Saturday, March 16, 1996. He was a native of Roanoke and a son of the late Louise Day and William J. Sowder. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a professor at Longwood College for many years. He is survived by two nieces, Ann S. Wilson, Richmond, Elisabeth Lee Sowder, Quinton, Va.; a great-niece, Ann Miller Wilson, Richmond. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery at 11 a.m. Saturday, with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble o fficiating.

SPURLOCK, Alice Estelle Poindexter, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 1996. Funeral services will be Saturday 11 a.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. Dr. J. Eugene Young will officiate with interment will be in the First Baptist Church Cemetery in Fincastle. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. ST. CLAIR, Vera Rider, 87, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 1996 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born January 8, 1909, in Bedfor d County, a daughter of the late Charles Rider and Susan Milton Rider. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Marvin St. Clair; two brothers, George A. Rider, Macon M. Rider; two sisters, Marinda O'Donohoe, Gladys Statler; one half-sister, Martha Hardesty. She is survived by two sons, William E. St. Clair, Bedford, Arthur D. St. Clair, Thaxton; two granddaughters, Lynn Orange, Bedford, Christie Maria St. Clair, Lynchburg; a great-grandson, Donald Ray Orange Jr., Bedford. STOWERS, Edward Hicks, 69 of Radford, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 1996 at Radford Community Hospital. Born in Bluefield, W. Va. on June 21, 1926. He was a son of the late Edd Hix and Texas Igo Stowers. He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Radford, the Elbert Munsey Masonic Lodge #298 of Rocky Gap, Order of the Eastern Star #154 of Rocky Gap, the New River Valley Shrine and the Kazim Temple. He was retired from Collins-Stowers Construction, Inc. He also enjoyed many years as a farmer in Bland County. He was preceded in death by one brother, William F. Stowers; one sister, Helen Stowers. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Eddith (Tootsie) Childress Stowers; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Howard Looney, Dublin; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Donald E. and Denna Stowers, Virginia Beach; and a granddaughter, Janella Ann Looney, Dublin. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 23, 1996 at 11 a.m. at the Seaver-Sanders and Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with the Rev. Lewis Weaver and the Rev. Ralph Kidd officiating. THOMPSON, Clinton Willard, (``Tommy''), 71, of Radford, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 1996. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and the former owner of Thompson Chrysler-Plymouth. Survivors include his wife, Anna Jean Thompson of Radford; three sisters, Louisa Goad of Maryland, and Bonnie Dickerson and Kevie Stone, both of Floyd; and his mother-in-law, Florence Wiley of Radford. The funeral ceremony will be held F riday, March 22, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church in Radford with Pastor O. D. Morgan and Pastor Elmon Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford

WALTER, Dorothy H. Cole, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 20, 1996 in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. She was the beloved wife of F. Alan Walter. Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen D. and Douglas W. Burnette, Cloverdale, Diane R. and Timothy Summers, Roanoke; two very special grandchildren, Dylan Rene'e and Corey Hannah Summers. A private graveside service will be conducted on Friday, March 22, 1996. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel.

WITT, Carlton R., 75, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 20, 1996. He was a member of Waverly Place Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and bus driver. He was also an Army Veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Mary Sink Witt; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Tony Beckner, Salem; a grandson, Anthony P. Beckner, Jr.; brother and sister-in-law, J. Rucker and Hazel Witt; sister, Comena Hale, Roanoke; sister and brother -in-law, Helen and Pete Donahue, Roanoke; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Waverly Place Baptist Church at noon Saturday, March 23, 1996, with the Rev. Charles Hoffler officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. YOUNG, Eleanor Wells, 60, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday, March 19, 1996 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday from the Richardson-Horne Chapel, conducted by Pastor Larry Meadors with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
