IMPENDING DIVORCE and bills force racing great Bobby Allison into hock.
Model cars made by the late Davey Allison will be among the items up for sale Saturday when NASCAR great Bobby Allison auctions off his Alabama home and its contents.
Allison and longtime wife Judy, who are planning to divorce, need the money that is expected to come from their lakefront house, personal possessions and 1.5 acres, Mrs. Allison said.
Allison was badly injured in a racing crash at Pocono, Pa., in 1988. He recovered from severe head injuries, but his hospitalization and rehabilitation were lengthy and costly.
``Due to the insurance not paying for Bobby's hospitalization in Pennsylvania, and his rehabilitation here in Birmingham, our total savings was eaten up,'' said Mrs. Allison, whose doll collection will be sold.
The Allisons have the right to reject bids for their home if they are too low, said the selling auctioneer.
Hundreds of people are expected to be on hand to to bid on items including furniture, a pool table, appliances, a piano, race tires signed by Allison, coolers, race hats, shirts and jackets, photographs and news articles about Allison's late sons Davey and Clifford, and model cars put together by Davey.
The youngest of Allison's two sons, Clifford, died in a crash while practicing in August 1992 at Michigan International Speedway. Davey died in July 1993 after a helicopter crash.
