The Virginia Lottery awarded the first $100,000 prize in its new Kicker game to a Florida man who bought his ticket in Roanoke.
John J. Short, a Jacksonville insurance salesman, stopped at the Quickette on Peters Creek Road to buy a ticket for Wednesday's Lotto drawing, according to a news release. He paid another dollar to play Kicker on the same ticket. After taxes, Short picked up $68,000.
The lottery started Kicker on March 10 as a companion game to Lotto. Players must buy a Lotto ticket in order to play Kicker.
The six Kicker numbers are randomly generated by computer and picked from a field that ranges from six zeros to six nines. If a ticket matches all six numbers in exact order, the person wins $100,000; the last five numbers, $10,000; the last four numbers, $500; the last three numbers, $50; and the last two numbers, $10. If players match the first and last numbers, they win $5; if they match the first or last number, they win a free Lotto ticket.
