Virginia Tech pitchers held Xavier to just five runs total as the Hokies swept the Musketeers in an Atlantic 10 Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday in Blacksburg.
Jon Hand (4-3) pitched a complete game as Tech won the opener 8-2. Hand allowed six hits, three of which came in the fifth inning when Xavier (11-15 overall, 1-3 A-10) scored both its runs. The right-hander struck out five and did not allow a walk.
The Hokies had eight hits, including two each by Kevin Barker and Kevin Kurilla.
Denny Wagner (2-2) and Blake Clancy combined on a five-hitter as Tech won the second game 9-3. The Hokies (13-12, 3-1) banged out 13 hits, including including three by Chad Foutz (Franklin County) and two each by Josh Herman (William Byrd) and David Fitt.
ETC. Tech picks up two softball wins
Virginia Tech's softball team won its fifth and sixth consecutive Atlantic 10 games by defeating St. Bonaventure 2-1 and 6-1 in Blacksburg.
The Hokies (11-13, 6-0 A-10) won the first game in extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th inning, Katie Mills doubled down the right-field line to score Beth Drombetta (Cave Spring). Jennie Kallio (Cave Spring) went the distance, allowing the Bonnies (3-14) four hits and one unearned run.
Tech jumped out to an early five-run lead en route to victory in the second game. Sarah Wolf, Melissa Sanderson and Mills each had two hits for the Hokies.
* Dan Morgan's unassisted goal with 2:32 remaining gave the Roanoke Junior Express a 2-2 tie with the unbeaten Florida Junior Panthers at the Tier Three Regionals ice hockey tournament in Hillsborough, N.C.
Jae scored the first goal for Roanoke, off an assist from Travis Smith, and Corey Payne made 42 saves. The Junior Express was held to 12 shots by Florida (48-0-3), but capitalized on its opportunities.
* Scott Holleman won two matches as Virginia garnered its highest finish ever at the National High School Wrestling Championships in Pittsburgh. The 171-pounder from Shawsville defeated wrestlers from Michigan and North Dakota as Virginia finished ninth. California won the meet, Minnesota was second and Ohio third.
* Melissa Corey (Staunton River) of Lynchburg College finished third in the discus with a toss of 25.82 meters at the William and Mary Invitational in Williamsburg.
* Michael Stearns, who rides for Team Smiley of Roanoke, finished second in the Jefferson Cup No.2 Road Race in Charlottesville. Teammate Michael Glowczynski finished fifth.
Stearns won the two-race series, which included the Jefferson Cup No.1 Road Race earlier this year.
