ABBOTT, Paul R., 75, of Roanoke died Monday, April 1, 1996, in a Salem hospital. He is survived by his former wife, Cora Bandy; two sons, Paul Alvin Abbott, Bedford, Steve Wayne Abbott, Roanoke; two daughters, Gloria Jean Yopp, Shawsville, Brenda Gale Abbott, Roanoke; one brother, David Abbott, Martinsville; two sisters, Delcie Huffman and Rosie Reynolds, both of New Castle; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a very, very special friend, Catherine Wiekle, Roanoke. ALTIZER, Fred Currin Sr., 90, of Christiansburg, died Wednesday morning, April 3, 1996, at Radford Community Hospital. He was born June 5, 1905, on Little River in Montgomery County. Mr. Altizer was a member of the Christiansburg Church of Christ for over forty years, and retired in 1971 from the Virginia Department of Highways after 41 years service. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, and is survived by his wife, Ruby Sutphin Altizer; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth A. and Mary Jane Altizer of Christiansburg, Fred Jr. and Sandra Altizer of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Keith, Jason and Jessica; and a brother, Lacy Altizer, Roanoke. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday from the Christiansburg Church of Christ, conducted by Mr. Tom Hodge, Mr. Larry Phillips and Mr. C. E. Mannon. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. DILLARD, Willie Meadows, 98, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 1996. DUNFORD, Maggie Elizabeth Austi n, 79, of Rt. 1, Austinville, died Tuesday, April 2, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late John and Annie Elizabeth Stoots Austin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Brown Dunford; and a son, Ralph Duane Dunford. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Barry Horton of Mt. Airy, N.C.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Nina Dunford, Gilmer and Effie Dunford, Thomas and Marie Dunford, Richard Dunford, all of Austinville; one sister, Pauline Taylor of Austinville; two brothers, Telford Austin, Cecil Austin, both of Austinville. Thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 5, 1996, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Barnes and the Rev. Clayton Quesenberry officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany Cemetery. HUFFINE, Bruce, 81, of Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, April 2, 1996, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Jonesborough, Tenn., and had made his home in Bristol for the past 46 years. He retired from Purity Bakery as Sales Manager and then retired as Store Manager of the Thrifty Supermarket in Bristol. He was a member of the Civitan Club and was a charter member of the Avoca Volunteer Fire Department. He was member of Addilynn Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Florence Huffine; one daughter, Charlotte Sams, Bluff City, Tenn.; one son, Charles M. Huffine, Roanoke, Va.; one brother, James Huffine, Johnson City, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Patricia Sams, Chad Sams, Richard Huffine, David Huffine, and Dr. Christine Huffine; a special friend, Doris Fish; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home, with Dr. Ross H. Dampier officiating. The committal service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Mausoleum Chapel in Glenwood Cemetery, with the Rev. J. Spurgeon McCartt officating. Survivors are two brothers, Virgil Trail, Willis, Cluber Trail, Bassett; four sisters, Elsie Cox, Neva Ratliff, Floyd, Anna Tew, Greensboro, N.C., Verna Radford, New Castle. LUCAS, Margaret Eleanor, 64, of Roanoke, quietly passed on to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 2, 1996 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born in Bridgeport, Conn., she moved to Roanoke in 1975. She had worked as a Registered Nurse for many years. She devoted her life to raising her children and loving her grandchildren. She loved animals and often worked with arts and crafts. She was a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, the French Club, and the Doctors Wives Club at the VA Medical Center. Survivors include her husband, Dr. George J. Lucas; sons, George M. Lucas, Huntsville, Ala., Brian J. Lucas and his wife, Patty, Kingsport, Tenn.; a daughter, Rosemary Van Brunt, and her husband, Michael, Richmond; grandchildren, Katie and Meghan Van Brunt, and Rachel Lucas. A liturgy of the Word service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel, Salem, with Father Kenneth Stofft officiating. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The family will receive friends following until 9 p.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held on Friday, 11:30 a.m. at Culpeper National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church.

SMITH, George Horsley, Ph.D., 87, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 1996, at home. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and received degrees in psychology from Cornell University and George Washington University. He retired in 1982 after 30 years as a Professor at Rutgers University, where he was head of the Psychology Department for 10 years. Dr. Smith authored two psychology textbooks, one of which was translated and printed in German. He was also a full time consultant in his field for several advertising agencies on Madison Avenue, New York City. Surviving are two sons, Scott R. Smith, Paramus, N.J., Brian G. Smith, Rockaway, N.J.; two grandchildren, Kyle and Allison Smith; two cousins, Jenny L. Nash, Roanoke, Mary B. Bane, Bedford; and a number of extended family members in the Roanoke Valley. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association (404 Eighth St. N.E., Suite C, Charlottesville, VA 22902) in memory of his late wife, Phyllis Viola Smith. SMYTH, Pauline Surber, 76, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 3, 1996, peacefully at her home after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel on Saturday, April 6, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 5 at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. Mrs. Smyth was born in Bluefield, Va., on August 13, 1919, daughter of Robert Cleveland Surber and Nell Grogg Surber. She grew up in Pulaski until she moved to Roanoke in the 1940s. There she met and married the ``love of her life,'' Lewis Donald Smyth. In 1952, they were blessed with a devoted daughter who was always by her side in times of need. In 1993, Mr. and Mrs. Smyth moved to Charlotte to be close to their daughter and son-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Lewis Donald Smyth. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, for 47 years. Mrs. Smyth was a caring and loving wife, mother, sister and friend to many. She was a ``natural-born'' homemaker who loved to cook, sew, shop and always made family and friends feel welcome in her home. She always made time to help family and friends in need and when she could not physically be there anymore, she believed her job was to pray for them. She exhibited tremendous inner strength, courage and faith in the pain of her illness until the end. The world was truly blessed by her presence and many people will miss their friend. Her daughter will miss her mother, sister, and best friend-all-in-one person. She is survived by her ``angel'' daughter, Jeanne Smyth-Roof, Charlotte, N.C.; supportive and devoted son-in-law, Garner Roof, Charlotte, N.C.; loving sisters, Ruth Price, Pearisburg, Evie Barbour, Greenwood, S.C.; brother, Harry Surber, Pulaski; sisters-in-law, Mildred Surber, Roanoke, Emma Surber, Pulaski, Gloria Surber, Pulaski; brothers-in-law, Keith Barbour, Greenwood, S.C., Herbert Covey, Moneta; and many special nieces and nephews.
THOMPSON, Charles Michael, 32, of Richmond, formerly of Montvale, died Monday, April 1, 1996, in a Richmond hospital. He was a member of Glade Creek Lutheran Church and employed as business manager of the Infiniti car dealership in Richmond. He is survived by his mother, June Adams Thompson of Buchanan; his father, James Michael (Mike) Thompson of Montvale; a brother, James Kevin Thompson, U.S. Navy, San Diego, Cal if.; his maternal grandmother, Ruth Gray Adams, and his paternal grandmother, Rachel Thompson Ellis. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Glade Creek Lutheran Church, Blue Ridge, with the Rev. Robert Maier officiating.
