THE TIPOFF

DOC'S WHAT'S UP: The New York Times called legendary folksinger and flatpick guitarist Doc Watson a "living museum of American roots music."

On Saturday at 8 p.m., the five-time Grammy Award winner will bring his signature blending of traditional Appalachian folk music with blues, country, gospel and bluegrass to Radford University's Preston Auditorium.

Tickets cost $10 for general public; $5 for non-Radford students. Call 831-5324.

GRAND STAND: The Fairview Ruritan's annual April Show of Stars from the Grand Ole Opry will feature the exceptional harmonizing and mandolin playing of Jim & Jesse and the Virginia Boys.

The show, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Fairview Ruritan Building, Galax, also will showcase renowned bluegrass gospel performers the Lewis Family.

Tickets cost $10; no charge for children under 12. Call 236-6316 or 236-2171.

EASTER'S ORIGINS: Easter eggs, baskets and the bunny who brings them aren't recent commercial concoctions, but traditions dating from Europe centuries ago. The Museum of American Frontier Culture in Staunton will explore them today through Monday.

Program highlights include using natural materials to dye eggs, making marbles, and traditional meal planning and preparation. Egg tipping, tossing, trundling, rolling and pecking are among the egg games planned. The German spring tradition of blessing the fields by rolling a giant wheel of fire downhill also will be observed, weather permitting.

Admission costs $7 for adults; $3 for children. Children younger than 6 are admitted free. Call 332-7850.

ALL ABOARD: "A Streetcar Named Desire," with guest artist Bridget Hanley as Blanche, will be performed Monday through April 13 in Radford University's Porterfield Theatre.

Hanley's stage, screen and television credits include "Here Come the Brides," "Harper Valley P.T.A." and "Murder She Wrote." Admission to the 8 p.m. performance costs $5 for general public; it's free for Radford students. Call 831-5289.

TWO FER: April's Mill Mountain Theatre Centerpiece is a duo of meaty monologues from a couple of emerging American playwrights. "Kreskin Be Damned" is about an accountant who, during his search for the meaning of life and love, finds personal triumph. "Haiti La Rain Gives Notice" voices the poignant and funny observations of a 40-something domestic worker on the night shift at the White House.

The performances, on the main stage, will be Wednesday at noon. There is no admission charge, and you may brown bag or purchase a box lunch at the theater, if desired. Call 342-5740.
