Rev. Michael Meloy takes Peninsula office
The Rev. Michael Meloy, pastor of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church since 1989, will become superintendent of the Peninsula District of the Virginia Conference after the annual United Methodist meeting in June. His successor at the Southwest Roanoke parish will be announced then. Ordained an elder in 1974, Meloy previously served churches in Richmond and Alexandria as well as Toano in the Peninsula District. He and his wife, Jane, have three adult children.
A former Fincastle resident, the Rev. Susan S. Garrett, has been appointed superintendent of the Harrisonburg District. Meloy will succeed a former Vinton resident, the Rev. Robert Casey, who is retiring as Peninsula District superintendent.
Rev. William Iler starts work at Lewis-Gale
The Rev. William "Will" Iler has begun his work as coordinator of pastoral care at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem. The native of Florida is 32 and a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He succeeds the Rev. David Wolfe, who went to an Indiana church in December. Iler comes from Kankakee, Ill., where for four years he was a chaplain at Riverside Medical Center. He has also worked in hospital chaplaincy in Birmingham, Ala., and Greenville, N.C. He is married to Patricia Moeller Iler, a physics and math teacher, and is the father of two young daughters. Iler is assisted at the hospital by a team of volunteer clergy.
Holocaust survivor to speak at Ferrum
"A Survivor's Tale," a lecture by Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz of Charlotte, N.C., is scheduled April 16 at 8 p.m. at Ferrum College. The free program will be held in Vaughn Chapel and is sponsored by the chaplain's office of the Franklin County college. Cernyak-Spatz, an Austrian by birth, spent time in three concentration camps. She is a professor emerita at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. The day after the lecture, "Schindler's List" will be shown free at 6:30 p.m. in Franklin Hall. Chauncey to lead Baptist conservatives
The Rev. Doyle Chauncey, associate pastor of administration at First Baptist Church in Norfolk for the past six years, has been confirmed as executive director of Virginia Southern Baptist Conservatives. The organization formed three years ago includes pastors and laity that support the beliefs and policies of fundamentalist leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention. Many other Virginia Baptists have dissociated themselves from the convention and refer to themselves as "moderates." Chauncey is a former treasurer of the moderate agency, the Baptist General Association of Virginia.
Group for singles formed for Bedford
A social and discussion group for single people - divorced, separated or widowed - is being formed for the Bedford area. Its first meeting will be April 18 at 6:45 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church in Bedford. The group is open to men and women, with no church affiliation required for membership. Concert to honor retiring professors
Two musicians long associated with Roanoke College, Dr. Donald G. Moe and Dr. Frank M. Williams, will be honored April 25 at 7 p.m. when a concert is presented by the choral and bell choirs of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, Md. The performance will be in Antrim Chapel at the college in Salem. A reception will follow at Alumni House. For reservations to the reception, call 375-2301 by April 18. The two professors are retiring.
Radford Baptist sets missions conference
Radford Baptist Church on Virginia 655 in Moneta will sponsor a missions conference April 19 and 20. The opening program includes a concert at 7:30 p.m. by Mission, a young-adult musical evangelism group. It has toured internationally. The next day, from 9 a.m. to noon, workers in Mexico, Russia, Taiwan, Mauritius and the Czech Republic will describe Christian evangelistic work going on in those areas. Church of the Brethren administrator resigns
Donald E. Miller, general secretary of the Church of the Brethren with headquarters in Elgin, Ill., has resigned effective at the end of this year. Miller will have completed 10 years in the administrative position. The native of Ohio had previously been on the faculty and staff of Bethany Theological Seminary. Among those on the committee to nominate a successor to Miller is Beth Middleton of Boones Mill.
