INVESTIGATORS CALL WAL-MART FIRE SUSPICIOUS

Salem fire officials are calling a fire early Friday in a Wal-Mart warehouse suspicious.

Firefighters responded to a call at the Wal-Mart on West Main Street in Salem at 1:30 a.m. after smoke was spotted coming from a rear storage area, said Fire Captain Doug Conner.

Sprinklers contained the fire to the storage area, and firefighters had the flames under control within 10 minutes, Conner said.

Extensive smoke and water damage occurred in the room where recyclable items such as cardboard boxes were kept.

The store was not open at the time of the fire, but employees and construction workers, who are expanding the store, were there. No injuries were reported.

Conner said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
