CBS TOP NOMINEE FOR DAYTIME EMMYS

It might be a pauper in prime time, but CBS is the king of daytime, a fact validated once again last week with the release of the Daytime Emmy nominations.

The network, which has been No. 1 in the ratings every week now for more than seven years, earned 69 Daytime Emmy nominations - more than ABC and NBC combined. CBS' ``The Young & the Restless,'' with 16 nominations, was tops for individual programs.

Daytime diva Susan Lucci, who for more than 20 years has played the devilish Erica Kane on ABC's ``All My Children,'' earned her 16th Emmy bid.

Lucci, we needn't remind anyone, has never won. And her quest is not any easier this year. She's going up against previous winners Erika Slezak of ABC's ``One Life to Live'' and Linda Dano of NBC's ``Another World.'' Also nominated for best actress: ``AW's'' Jensen Buchanan and ``Y&R's'' Jess Walton.

Multiple Emmy winner - and multiple character player - David Canary of ``AMC'' leads the best-actor list. Also nominated: Charles Keating (``AW''), Maurice Bernard (``General Hospital''), Peter Bergman (``Y&R'') and Eric Braeden (``Y&R'').

The 23rd annual Daytime Emmy awards will be presented May 22 during a black-tie ceremony at, for the first time ever, Radio City Music Hall. The show will be televised live by CBS.

Following CBS, PBS had 49 nominations, syndicated fare earned 42, ABC got 40, NBC had 19 and Fox 14.

In line after ``Y&R,'' PBS' ``Sesame Street'' earned 12 nominations, ABC's ``General Hospital'' and CBS' ``Guiding Light'' each grabbed 10, and ABC's ``AMC,'' NBC's ``AW'' and PBS' ``Reading Rainbow'' each pulled in eight.

Phil Donahue, who is ending a 29-year stint as a daytime talk host, was nominated in both the program and host categories. He'll face off against Oprah Winfrey, Leeza Gibbons, Montel Williams, and Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford. Winfrey has won best host and best program six of the last 10 years.

ABC's ``AMC'' and ``GH,'' NBC's ``Days of Our Lives,'' and CBS' ``Y&R'' are competing for best drama.
