THE BASKETBALL PLAYER is arrested after refusing to leave a private party.
Harold Deane, the leading scorer for Virginia's men's basketball team this past season, was arrested Saturday morning after a disturbance at a private club.
Deane was charged with trespassing and resisting arrest following an incident shortly after midnight at the Fry Springs Beach Club in Charlottesville.
Gary Pleasants, a sergeant with the Charlottesville Police Department, said officers were called to the scene after approximately 150 people had been refused admission to a party that apparently was overbooked.
``The crowd had become unruly and the police got on their public-address system and asked the people to leave,'' Pleasants said. ``A lot of the people left. About 75 people remained.
``When the crowd started to the door, Harold Deane was yelling and became uncooperative. He pushed two officers and one of the officers fell back against a wall and scraped his arm.''
Deane, one of five people arrested, was taken to the magistrate's office and released on bond.
Deane is the fourth person with a connection to the UVa men's basketball program to be arrested since February, along with freshmen Scott Johnson and Darryl Presley, and recruit Melvin Whitaker.
Johnson and Presley pleaded guilty earlier this week to charges of petty larceny, although the charges will be dropped if they perform 100 hours of community service and do not have any additional offenses in the next year.
Whitaker has been indicted on a charge of malicious wounding, a felony, as the result of an alleged attack on a UVa football player. Whitaker goes on trial June 26 in Albemarle County.
Neither Deane nor head coach Jeff Jones could be reached for comment concerning the incident Saturday morning.
