At least eight people died each day last year while waiting for an organ transplant, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing.
In annual figures released Friday, the Richmond-based network said a record 20,006 transplants were performed in 1995, but the national list had an all-time high of 43,937 patients awaiting transplants.
``We are pleased that more patients than ever received a transplant last year, but thousands continue to wait,'' said Dr. Bruce Lucas, the network's president. ``It's tragic that so many patients die waiting for lifesaving transplants, while thousands of people dying each year could give the gift of life.'' - Associated Press
