Archer anniversary
Joe and Lottie Archer of Goodview celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 20, 1996.
Joe, formerly of Butler, Pa. was self employed for over 50 years retiring in 1984. From 1956 to 1984 he owned and operated an Amoco Service Station on Williamson Road and later moved to a location on Orange Avenue. Lottie Aliff, of Roanoke, Va., was a Nurse Anesthetist and retired from Community Hospital with 30 years of service.
The couple was married at the home of her parents, in Roanoke, Va., on April 20, 1946. They resided in Butler, Pa. for 10 years and have made Goodview their home for the past 40 years.
They have a son, Tim, and his wife, Halide Salem, who live in Blacksburg, Va., and a daughter, Andrea, who lives in Tallmadge, Ohio.
Tim, Halide and Andrea hosted a reception at the Vinton War Memorial on April 20 to celebrate this special anniversary with family and friends.
Brown anniversary
Rommie C. and Dorothy V. Brown celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 20, 1996. The celebration was held at Green Hill Church of the Brethren, hosted by their son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. They were married April 20, 1946 in Blacksburg, and have lived in Salem for 45 years. She's the former Dorothy V. Vaught. They have one son, Jimmie of Salem; and four grandsons, Jimmie Lee, John, Ben and Brandon. He is retired from the N&W Railway. She is retired from Eli Lilly.
DeHart anniversary
Grover C. and Martha Santolla DeHart were honored by their children on March 30, 1996 with an open house at the Pembroke Fire Department Activity Building to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
They were married on March 31, 1946 in Pearisburg, Va. at the Holy Family Catholic Church, were they remain active members.
G.C. retired from the Giles County School board after serving as a dedicated and unique educator at Pembroke and Eastern Elementary for 24 years. He was a Marine Corp Staff Sergeant who served his country in WWII. Martha was a kind and loving care giver at Giles Memorial Hospital for many years and retired from Celanese after 18 years service.
G.C. and Martha are the parents of four children; Michael DeHart, Ripplemead, Cathy DeHart, Blacksburg, Susanne Brawn, Champaign, Ill., and Mary Elizabeth Dowdy, Pembroke. In attendance were their six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren who are Cindy Faint and son Mack, David Ellis and son Jamie, Josh Dowdy, Summer Dowdy, Craig DeHart, and Justin Oglesby.
All of the couples living siblings attended including Garnett DeHart, Barefoot Bay, Florida, Tony Santolla, Maybrook, Billy Santolla, Hoges Chapel, Gabe ``Nutz'' Santolla, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Rosa Rowe, Blacksburg, and Libby Johnson, Pearisburg. Many other relatives and special friends joined in the celebration to honor G.C. and Martha's Go lden Anniversary.

Hampton anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Chester Hampton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, April 20, with a reception at the Huntington Court United Methodist Church. It was hosted by their son, Stephen C. Hampton and wife, Carolyn; and daughter, Mary R. Hampton. They are the grandparents of Stephanie M. Draper and Shannon L. Moore. They have one great-grandchild, Elizabeth Brooke Draper. Mrs. Hampton is the former Virginia Lavinder and retired from Fulton Trucks, Inc. Chester is retired from Crestar Bank.
Helems anniversary
Jean and Hale Helems celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 20, 1996. Jean is the former Jean Brizendine and is a homemaker. Hale is retired from Craig Botetourt Electric Co-op.
A reception was held in their honor on April 21, 1996, at the New Castle Christian Church. It was hosted by their children and grandchildren. They have one son, Eddie and one daughter, Susie. They also have four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Kelley anniversary
H. Odell and Gloria A. Kelley celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, April 20, 1996. Their family and friends joined them in a celebration dinner that was held at The Homeplace Restaurant in Catawba.
Born in Nace, Virginia, Mr. Kelley formerly owned Speed Radio and TV Service and also worked many years at Holdrens, Inc. Mrs. Kelley, originally from Flushing, New York, has been a homemaker during most of their marriage. The couple resides in Fincastle; they have two daughters and sons-in-law, and three grandchildren.
Linkous anniversary

Harvey and Ava Linkous celebrated their 63rd anniversary on April 15th. They were married in Pulaski, Va., in 1933. They have five sons, one daughter, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Lucado anniversary
Mabel K. Newman and B. A. ``Jack'' Lucado were married on April 21, 1946, at the Melrose Methodist Church in Roanoke, Va. They have a son, Larry, who lives in Salem, and a daughter, Pam, who also lives in Salem. They have one granddaughter. Jack retired from Norfolk & Southern Railway in 1984 after 35 years of service. Mabel retired from Eli Lilly in 1982 after 23 years of service. A 50th anniversary celebration will be given by their family at the Roanoke Moose Lodge at 2:00 p.m. on the 21st.
McCallum anniversary
Edward and Iris McCallum celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends on Sunday, April 14, 1996. They were married on April 19, 1946. She is the former Iris Jean Snyder. Ed is retired from the Roanoke Times & World News Corporation and Iris is retired from Eli Lilly, Inc. The reception was held at the Vinton War Memorial and was hosted by their children and spouses, Jim and Sharon, Buster and Emily, Johnny and Linda, Cheryl and Paul, and Eddie and Tinya. The couple has nine grandchildren, Jim, Kristie, Ashley, Leanna, Darryl, Drew, Tandy, Shawn, and Brianna. They have one great-grandchild, Tyler.

Phlegar anniversary
Ballard T. and Ruby McDaniel Phlegar celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on April 21, 1996. They were married April 21, 1935 in Roanoke County. They have lived in Salem for 41 years. She's the former Ruby McDaniel. They have two children, Montra Clements of Roanoke, and Barry Phlegar of Salem; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He's retired from Life Insurance Co. of Virginia. She's retired from Rowe Furniture. They are members of Fairview Methodist Church and the Antique Car Club.
Pollard anniversary
Hildrey H. and Ocelia Pollard of Vinton recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. They were married in Roanoke, Va., on April 20, 1946, by the Reverend C. S. Trammell.
Their children are Thomas G. and Kathy Pollard, Huntsville, Ala., and Carolyn P. and Tom Philpott, Vinton. They have three grandsons, Phillip, Eric, and Mark Pollard; a step-granddaughter and husband Patti and Mike Williams, and a step-great-granddaughter, Lauren Ashley Williams.
Mr. Pollard, born in Bedford County, is a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and retired as Supervisor of Transportation for Roanoke County Schools in 1990. A Roanoke native, Mrs. Pollard is the former Ocelia Hogan. She worked for Holdren's Inc. The couple have been active in many area civic organizations and are longtime, active members of Waverly Place Baptist Church, Roanoke.
Smith anniversary
Mr. Richard Freeman Smith, Sr. and Mrs. Vanzorn Badger Smith of Troutville, celebrated their sixtieth (60th) wedding anniversary on Saturday, April 20th at a dinner hosted by their children at ``The Home Place'' restaurant in Catawba. They were married on April 18, 1936 in Jamaica, New York.
Richard, a retired bus driver with the New York Transit Authority, is an avid gardener and enjoys country/western music, while Vanzorn, a retired school teacher former with the Nassau County, New York school system, takes pleasure in reading, sewing and crafts.
The couple's five children and their spouses are Jim and Lillian Boyd of Bolingbrook, Ill., Sam and Christine Belnavis of Charlotte, N.C., Richard and Carolyn Smith, Jr.. of San Diego, Calif., Raymond Smith of Marleton, N.J., and Christopher and Dawn Smith of Roosevelt, New York.
The Sr. Smiths, who are members of St. Andrews R.C. Church of Roanoke where the Reverend Steven R. Rule is pastor, have also been blessed with seventeen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Thomas anniversary
Roscoe H. and Shirley F. Thomas celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, April 20, 1996. A reception was held in their honor at Windsor Hills Baptist Church with family and friends. They were united in marriage April 20, 1946 in Roanoke by the Rev. Edwin M. Vaughan. She is the former Shirley Gwendolyn Fogle, and is retired from the office of Dr. Walter F. Manley, Jr. with 26 years of service. Roscoe is retired from Appalachian Power Company with 42 years service. Their children and spouses are: R.H. (Tom) and Pamela Thomas, III, Richmond, VA; Trena Thomas and Raymond H. Bowman, Hardy, VA. They have three granddaughters, Christine, Courtney, and Lauren, a grandson, Raymond H. Bowman, Jr. and his wife, Cynthia C. Bowman.
Wertz anniversary
Fifty years ago today, April 21, 1946, Glenn R. Wertz of Salem and Melva Flora of Rocky Mount were united in marriage at Antioch Church of the Brethren in Rocky Mount, Va. They were honored by their sons, Glenn R. II and Wayne, their daughters-in-law, Jeanette and Sylvia, and their grandson, Brett, and granddaughter, Kelly. Mr. Wertz is retired from The Roanoke Times and Mrs. Wertz is a retired nurse from Wolfe Medical Group.

A reception was held at the First Baptist Church in Roanoke, Virginia on April 13, 1996 with all their children attending. The couple was married on April 19, 1946 in Salem, Virginia. They have lived in Roanoke for 47 years. She's the former Agnes V. Perdue. They have one son, Richard of Norcross, Ga.; and four daughters, Faye Bulin of King, N.C.; Cindy Woolwine of Portland, Or.; Linda Woolwine of Blacksburg, Va.; and Sharon Wilson of Copper Hill, Va. They have 8 grandchildren. He is retired and is employed part time with RGM Properties. She is retired and enjoying her music.
