The Greater Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross has received the largest gift in its 79-year history - a new home.
Reynolds Metals Co. donated its former research and development building downtown. The Red Cross will renovate and expand the building as its new downtown headquarters.
The Red Cross simultaneously announced a $4.7 million fund-raising drive - 63 percent already has been raised - to finance the renovations and to develop programs.
Richard G. Holder, Reynolds chairman, said Friday he hoped the building - valued at $455,000 - ``will serve the Red Cross as well as it has served us.''
William H. McFaddin, chairman of the local Red Cross chapter, said the organization has outgrown its old building, just around the block.
The old building has 18,000 square feet of usable space. The new building, with the addition of another floor, will have 30,000 square feet, plus updated communication technology for quicker Red Cross response to disasters.
