THE RIGHT FIELDER helps Salem overcome a great performance by Frederick pitcher Chris Fussell.
Chad Gambill's RBI single in the top of the 10th inning off Frederick reliever Nerio Rodriguez helped give the Salem Avalanche a 2-1 victory over the Frederick Keys in a Carolina League game Sunday at Harry Grove Stadium.
Ronnie Hall led off the 10th for Salem (9-8) with a walk off Rodriguez, who had replaced Frederick starter Chris Fussell. Blake Barthol sacrificed Hall to second, and Gambill followed with a single that scored Hall with the winning run.
Luis Colmenares (2-1) got the victory, going 21/3 innings and giving up no runs on two hits and no walks while striking out one. Rodriguez (1-1) took the loss, giving up one run in one inning. He walked one and struck out one.
Frederick (6-9) got a splendid outing from Fussell, who gave up only three hits in nine innings - all singles - while walking three and striking out 12.
Salem scored its other run in the first when Chan Mayber led off with a single, took second on a groundout, and scored on a hit-and-run play with John Giudice at the plate. Giudice hit a grounder and was thrown out at first, but Mayber beat the throw home for the early run.
