ALTIZER, Versie Bell, 87, of Christiansburg, died suddenly Thursday morning, April 25, 1996, at Radford Community Hospital. The widow of Harley Arvil Altizer, she was also precede d in death by two sons, Manfred and Bruce Smith. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Rudolph and Sarah Smith, Robert W. and Elizabeth Smith, Steve and Dorothy Smith, all of Christiansburg; two daughters and a son-in-law, Christine and Benson Duncan, Christiansburg, Jean Akers, Riner; one daughter-in-law Sally Smith, Christiansburg; one sister, Virginia Quesenberry, Bassett; one special niece, Vada Broyles, Christiansburg; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Edgemont Christian Church, conducted by Mr. Edgar Sutphin and Mr.. Carl Bean, with burial in Sunset Cemetery. Friends may call any time after 11 a.m. Friday at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

ATKINS, Herbert Leo, 66, of Salem, died Thursday, April 25, 1996. Arrangements by John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem.

BOHON, Mary Wright, 88, of Salem, died Wednesday, April 24, 1996 in a Salem Hospital. She is survived by one sister, Cellus B. Manspile, Salem; five nieces, Janie Angell, Joan Jennings, Brenda Ridenhour, Judy Christenson, Susie Manspile; seven nephews, Shirley Kipps, Robert Manspile, Jerry Wright, Don Manspile, O'Neil Wright, Ronnie Manspile, Bill Manspile; special great-nieces and nephews, Roberts Manspile Jr. and Monica Wilson, Gail Davis and several other great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. at the Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Mike Derflinger officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Friends may call at Lotz Salem Chapel after 12 noon on Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fort Lewis Rescue Squad or to Locust Grove United Methodist Church Stained Glass Window Fund.

BOWLING, Donald Thomas, 64, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 24, 1996, at his residence. He was a son of the late Charlie W. and Nannie Patrick Bowling of Cedar Bluff. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Howell Bowling; son, Donald F. Bowling and wife, Alice, of Largo, Fla.; daughters, Debra P. Richardson and husband, Frank, of Bowie, Md., and Donna L. Bowling, Roanoke; two grandchildren, Heather Richardson and Anthony Bowling; sisters, Mary Brumfield, Tampa, Fla., Frances Ethel Mitchell, Tampa, Fla., Nancy Lawback, Cleveland, Ohio; brothers, A. L. Perry Bowling, Cleveland, Ohio, and Jimmy Bowling, Spencer, W.Va. A memorial service will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 1996, with Rev. Paul Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Hospice Fund, or the American Cancer Society. Interment will be private.

COPENHAVER, Alma Weddle, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 1996. She was a member of Mel rose Baptist Church, and a former member of Enon Baptist Church. She was a retired restaurant owner and an owner and operator of a beauty shop in Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by husbands, George Webster Copenhaver, and I. Edward Weddle. She is survived by a daughter, Linda K. Nemeth; two stepdaughters, Vickie C. Whitlock, and Judith C. Dulaney; stepsons, George W. Copenhaver; grandchild, Tracy Christian; seven stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild, Andrea Nicole Christian; four brothers, Kay Brown, Warren Brown, Henry Brown, and John Brown; a sister, Mallie Marie Theimer. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 1996 at Oakey's North Chapel with Chaplain Thomas Clay officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. HALEY, William D., (``Bill""), 72, of Roanoke, died Thursday, April 25, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma M. Haley and was an active member of Teamsters Local #171. Surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Kitty Haley of Salem; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Mike Collin of Hardy, Bonnie and Kenny Mea dor of Salem; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Ross Haley of Roanoke. Services will be at Oakey's North Chapel 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 1996. The Rev. Dave Vanderpool and the Rev. Gregory D. Reynolds will officiate. HOLMES, Clayton Ernest, 91, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, April 25, 1996 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born July 29, 1904 in Sechlerville, Wisc. to the late Ernest Rolf and Ida Harvey Holmes. He was educated and taught at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls and Madison, Wisc., Penn State University, Oregon State College and V.P.I. & S.U. He was a professor in Poultry Science at V.P.I. & S.U. He raised purebred polled Hereford cattle and was a founding member of Virginia Polled Hereford Association and the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association. During WWII, he was instrumental in developing a wingless chicken. At Va Tech, he instituted and maintained for 20 years, a flock of totally inbred chickens for medical science. He authored several books on animal/poultry genetics and was listed in several Who's Who in Education/Agriculture Education. He made numerous other contributions to agriculture and education during his career. Dr. Holmes is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Clayton James and Jo Holmes, Blacksburg and Rolf Frank and Mary Holmes, San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren, Velecia, Clayton E. II, Leroy, Harry, James, all of Blacksburg, Silvia, Scott, Mike and Jesse, all of Texas; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Sherman Holmes, Madison, Wisc. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 28, 1996, at 2 p.m. at Northside Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Hugh Springer officiating. Interment will follow in the Holmes Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.

PRUNTY, Laverne Hester Hunter, 65, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 1996 at Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. She was a graduate of Armstrong High School and St. Phillips School of Nursing and was employed as LPN at Burrell Memorial Hospital for 13 years and retired from the VA Medical Center, Salem after 25 years of service. She was married to the Rev. Dr. Alfred S. Prunty and was a faithful member of the Ministers' Wives Alliance. Survivors include her husband, Rev. Dr. Alfred S. Prunty, Roanoke; one daughter, Melissa Prunty Kemp; one grandson, Jesse Kemp both of Canton, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. Willie M. Vincent, Mechanicsville; nieces, Carlene (Eddie) Hamlin and Madeline Murphy all of Midlothian, Valerie (Dale) Johnson, Herndon, Antonia Vincent, Mechanicsville; nephews, James Vincent, Seattle, Wash., James R. Prunty, Shaker Heights, Ohio, Frances and Alfonso Williams, Philadelphia, Penn.; sisters-in-law, Edna B. Prunty and Lavern Fuller Prunty both of Roanoke, Marie Hunter and Dorothy Brown, both of Richmond, Eleanor Prunty, Salem; brother-in-law, John Prunty, Salem; other nieces and nephews , in Richmond, Va., relatives and friends; and her church families of Slate Hill and Greater Mt. REYNOLDS, Ethel Mae Wiltshire, 77, of Natural Bridge Station, died Wednesday, April 24, 1996, at the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Mrs. Reynolds was born January 29, 1919, in Campbell County, a da ughter of the late James Franklin Wiltshire Sr. and Callie Wiseman Wiltshire. She was a member of the Arnold's Valley Southern Baptist Church, and was the widow of Ernest B. Reynolds. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Michael E. Reynolds and Ginger Pagett, Natural Bridge Station; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna R. and Roy Powell, Natural Bridge Station; brother and sister-in-law, James Franklin and Clarice Wiltshire, Richmond; five grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 1996, at the graveside in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Donald W. Stine officiating. SHANNON, Cora D., 98, of Moneta, passed away Thursday, April 25, 1996, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born July 6, 1897, in Orbisonia, Pa. She was a retired school teacher and local politician of Blair County, Pa., and has been a resident of Moneta since 1970. She received a Bachelors Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters Degree from Pennsylvania State University. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Altoona, Pa.; the Eastern Star #290, Jordan Shrine #24, Ladies Auxiliary Knights Templer, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of America #116, American Association of University Women, Business and Professional Womens Club, National Retired Teachers Association, Pennsylvania Retired Public School Employees Association, Association for Childhood Education International. She is survived by a son, Lee H. Shannon, Moneta; a daughter, Mrs. William F. Glass, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; four grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, April 27, 1996, at 4 p.m. from the Radford Baptist Church Cemetery, by the Rev. Tommy Floyd and Rev. Vernon DeLong. There will be no viewing or visitation at the funeral home, and the family requests no flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.

STURGIS, Sibyl Ann, 48, of Lynchburg, formerly of Rock Hill, S.C., passed away Wednesday, April 27, 1996, at her home. Miss Sturgis was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a Master's Degree in French, and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Master's Degree in Library Science. She was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church of Lynchburg, and was librarian at Lynchburg General Hospital. She is survived by her parents, T. Johnson and Anna Beth Lupo Sturgis of Rock Hill, S.C., and a sister, Ellie Traynham Sturgis of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from St. John's United Methodist Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Ted Brazil and the Rev. Lee Ann Livingston officiating. Interment will be in Laurelwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her parents, 1112 Evergreen Circle, Rock Hill.
